Quote:
The Mayor of London has vowed to push through the stalled tram extension to Crystal Palace, despite no concrete plans on how to pay for it.

The much vaunted £170m plan was abandoned in November 2008 due to lack of funding, alongside £3bn of other transport projects across the capital.

But Boris Johnson confirmed on a tram trip today the scheme was back on the agenda ahead of the looming mayoral elections in 2012.

He said: "It's always been our ambition to extend the Croydon Tramlink.

"Today we announce we're going to extend it to Crystal Palace.
....
Mr Johnson's Labour opponent in the mayoral race, Ken Livingstone, has already promised to get the extension back on track after criticising the Mayor for dropping the scheme.

If they are going to Crystal Palace then why not use the tunnels to bring the extension to Horniman Museum?

Hullo Michael,

Both tunnels are used by Bats for roosting. As an 'endangered species' they are so highly protected that I can't see the tunnels ever being used for anything again.

Here's an example of how seriously this is taken...

A quarrying company, in Derbyshire I think, has agreed to re-route one of Network Rails lines around a hill that it currently tunnels through. The hill will then be quarried away. Upon the diversion opening the existing tunnel will instantly be sealed up to keep Bats out for, if they roosted the whole multi-million pound scheme would have to be abandoned.

I wonder how many property owners kill Bats to ensure they're not afflicted by these stringent regulations? I suspect a very great many.

Best - Ian
Perhaps the bats would agree to share the tunnel if there was a stop specially for them?
I see the proposed extension would start at Birkbeck and head up from Penge via Crystal Palace Rail Station to Crystal Palace Bus Station. Getting it across the Parade and down in to the tunnel would be an interesting engineering challenge - perhaps it could run through the famous subway under the Parade?

I've been trying to think of a suitably witty name for Michael's suggested bat stop in the tunnel but have so far failed. Any suggestions anyone?
