Hi
I moved to the area 6 months ago. Friends ask me where I live and I'm not sure how to reply, Honor Oak or Forest Hill?
I live on Devonshire Road, nearer to HOP station than FH, near the junction with Dunoon Road.
Cheers
Ewan
Yep I agree, I too am on Devonshire Road, just south of Tyson Road and have always thought of myself as Forest Hill
Thanks for the response, it seems to determined by which station you are closest to, which depends whether you are north or south of Tyson Road. As I live north of Tyson, I guess that means I live in Honor Oak - confusion over.
I concur. I live a few doors down from the nature reserve towards HOP station and consider myself an Honor Oaker, though in estate agence parlance, I prefer Dulwich Borders.
I have always thought of Honor Oak as a part of Forest Hill....
The multimap link, posted by Ghis, shows Honor Oak and Honor Oak Park in the same grey upper case font as Forest Hill.
Are there two separate suburbs called HO and HOP?
You live in London (GLA), Lewisham (London Borough of), a parish (St Augustine, Christ Church or whatever) and a postal district (SE23 which, I believe, is still technically called Forest Hill). You also live in a ward and a constituency. Beyond that, it is up to you; I don't think there are any other significant fixed modern boundaries.
Where you live could be where you do your shopping, where you catch a train or simply where you want to belong. Frankly, mostly I'm from "south London"; if I say Sydenham or Forest Hill the response is usually "where's that?".
Forest Hill is in East London, well so most people tell me.
Honor Oak was our local station (East Horniman Heights, West HH was Lordship Road Station), when the Crystal Palace High Level line was still operational. Forget being on the tube, reinstate this wonderful historic branch line.
BD - off the tube for a lifetime
I once fell asleep in a taxi on the way home and woke up in east London in Forest Gate!
It's easy to confuse the two places!
Sherwood - ditto; The taxi driver wanted to charge me extra for the about turn too!

The district of Honor Oak extends beyond the borders of SE23. The 63 bus route terminates at 'Honor Oak', the terminus itself being in Forest Hill Road in SE22 (East Dulwich), while the Honor Oak Estate is located in SE4 (Brockley). I've always thought of One Tree Hill as the centre of Honor Oak, since that is where the tree for which HO is named was located.
I like the sentiment above that where you 'live' doesn't have to be defined by the borders on the map. I technically live in SE26, but I'm so close to Forrest Hill that I do my shopping on the Forrest Hill high street, frequent the Forrest Hill pubs and catch the train at Forrest Hill station. When people ask where I live, I say Forrest Hill. Seems right to me.
Edit that to read 'Forest Hill'. I guess if I'm going to claim to live somewhere I don't actually live, I ought to at least spell it correctly.
Hang about... according to that map, I don't live in Forest Hill but I do most definitely have an SE23 postcode - and the Horniman Gardens don't count either?
Shouldn't surprise me though I guess since despite having the SE23 postcode, I pay council tax to Southwark, get East Dulwich police when there are problems and vote in the College Ward. I'm really mixed up when people ask me where I live!
My neighbours across the road might be miffed at being left out since they are Lewisham resident
Apparently I live in Sydenham along with Forest Hill station, Honor Oak Park is in Forest Hill, and the Horiman is presumably in East Dulwich. I don't like this map!
