Hi all,

We have just moved to the area (Kilmorie Road), bringing over our cat from Germany. Unfortunately it went missing on Thursday evening after just two days. :-( I am really worried about it, as I don't know what has happened to him. Maybe he just got lost and is now somewhere in the area without knowing how to get back. It would thus be great if you could look out for him or ask your neighbours to have a look if there is any new black and white cat in the neighbourhood - I am also planning to put up posters, but I won't be able to do this before Monday.

He is a male black and white cat with rather long hair, 2 years old, has a white patch on his black back and a smaller black patch on his white belly. His head is black on the top and white from the nose on downwards, his feet are mainly white, but with a few black patches especially on the front feet. He is quite curious and likes to play, but also tends to hiss at people he doesn't know if they want to lift him up...

I have twice in the past week seen a cat that looks like the photo (but I'm no cat expert- looks like as in long haired and b/w and friendly) in Rockbourne Road. The kids and I tried to stroke it, and it came when we coaxed it, but had a very distinctive way of lowering its back when we tried to touch it: I assumed it had arthritis or was sensitive somehow. Maybe yours? Best of luck, anyway.

N.B. I've been using Rockbourne Rd twice daily in the week since January, and haven't seen this puss 'til recently, so I hope you're successful.

Hi again. As it turned out, it was not my cat in Rockbourne Road, I believe: I saw a black and white one there, so I think you meant this one, but it did not have the patches and his face had a black mark on it. Anyways, thanks a lot for letting me know - the next time, it might be him! If it was not a fox that got him, as we just saw one in our garden.

I don't think foxes tend to attack cats.

Thanks for all your clicks on the thread, this gave me some hope that Shami might be found if he is around somewhere - but I am glad to announce that we found Shami sleeping on our sofa this morning! :-)

No idea where my cat was for the last 3 1/2 days, but I am still worried about the foxes, please have a look at this thread in the forum of Sydenham - there have been several instances where foxes were actually seen hunting and killing cats:

Also, I spoke to one of our neighbours and the lady said that they had lost 5 cats recently - might be because of foxes, might be because of cat hunters (that's what the lady assumed because it was always on Mondays when the cats disappeared) or just that they were killed on the road or lost. Just a shame because I don't want to lock my cat away, it is a free spirit and would be quite unhappy about it, so I need to risk it.

I'm glad your cat is back. I don't know if this helps. But a vet told me once that when you bring a cat to a new house, you need to keep them inside for 6 weeks, so they get the scent of the house and think of it as home.

If not, they get a bit confused on where to go back to.

That's what the RSPCA told us to do with our rescue cat, and we went to great lengths to prevent him getting out. When we finally gave him his freedom he didn't want to know. He likes to sit by the open door looking out and will venture cautiously into the garden but comes rushing in at the slightest unaccustomed noise.

Glad to hear Shami is back safely. Bit embarrassed by my lack of cat-identifying skills, though.

You are all right with your comments to keep the cat in the flat, for a week at least - that was also my plan, but all I wanted was to be nice to him, as he kept looking out of the window into the garden - now, I won't let him out for a bit, I am still too worried, more because of the foxes than that he really might get lost, to be honest. Just a shame for him as we are both at work during the day, at the moment - still, he is cat and I am sure he will manage...

I have two small cats. In the five years I have lived here I have seen them frequently see off foxes. On one occassion I saw a fox definetly being aggressive to the cat. I think on balance I would be a lot more concerned about the staffie like dog owners who walk their dogs off the lead than I would about foxes.

Just to let you know that foxes are only interested in kittens small animals, not cats. My cat actually has two foxes he hangs with and they actually play, walk together. Its more of the press giving foxes a bad name as usual.

Our elderly female cat used to hide in bushes and ambush foxes with a slap on the nose. She had no fear at all. The foxes were always terrified.
