looks like things are happening at those 2 interesting 'back to back' houses in Perry Vale. The one closest to the road has got a lovely new front door and looks like its getting fixed up generally. The other one, mostly hidden behind a high fence (sold recently?) is looking good too - at least the bits I can see as I tip-toe past, peering over the fence (nosey neighbour!)
Well done to whoever is responsible - these 2 houses are a really interesting bit of SE23 architecture and its good to see them getting some TLC.
I take it you are referring to 101 and 103 Perry Vale. They are both listed grade II buildings, of about 1843. It is good to know that something is being done to 101, which has been sorely neglected for some years.
Yes I know these houses well. Understand the one that fronts onto the road recently sold so could account for the extensive renovations. Nice house but not good location, traffic noise must be a problem
I saw some of the work being done about the doorway - doesn't strike me as Grade II listed style quality workmanship!!??

I would have thought so, but the brickwork and scaffolding look rather amateurish, don't you think? Of course they could simply be preparing the area, but that too should be strictly controlled, no?
I'm no expert, but i am not sure if English Heritage would be terribly interested in the quality of the scaffolding!
How old exactly are these houses meant to be. Does anyone know.??

Thanks for interesting link re date of 1797. A work colleague knew the previous owner and she said like a dolls house in side. Very small.
Would be interesting to know who original occupants were etc.

Does anyone know what is happening with the house at 101 Perry Vale?
The reason I am interested is because my ancestors lived there from around 1840 at least until1886.
The family living there were the Goshawks and Joseph Goshawk (my great great grandfather) was a nurseryman/gardener he had a big family and they moved there from Islington (all on the census forms)
I have never visited the house but if anyone can tell me if it has been restored and not knocked down-I would love to go there and look and take photos. My great grandfather also lodged there prior to marrying my great grandmother.

Yes, the houses are still there. They're listed buildings so they're not going to disappear in a hurry. I'm not sure which is which but I assume 101 is the one facing onto the road. It's been repainted since those photos were taken but I think it still has scaffolding up.
Was it this great great grandfather gardener who planted the monkey puzzle tree in his back garden?
Thanks for your reply-I am glad the house is still there and isn't likely to be pulled down! It'll give me a chance to come and look at it. Have you any idea how old it is?
About the monkey puzzle tree-I really must come and have a look at the house and can the garden be seen from the road? It's very possible I suppose that my great great grandfather could have planted the tree! His address in the 1881 census was Swiss Nursery, Perry Vale-so I am guessing there must have been a retail business alongside the house? To supply other gardeners, maybe?
