A male tawny owl appears to have taken residence somewhere in Garthorne Road Nature Reserve and has been calling on many eves in the last few weeks. Hopefully there is a female in the area, too. Haven't been able to spot the owl yet (and that is probably a good thing, too), but the call is quite distinct. (and no, it wasn't just for Halloween Smile )
Would be lovely if we had owls in SE23 permanently.
This morning at around 5, a tawny owl was calling somewhere in vicinity of One Tree Hill. I heard one there at dusk one afternoon in January, a couple of years ago. Let's hope this is a sign that they are moving back to our part of the world.
Heard again this morning at 4. Definitely One Tree Hill and it might have been a pair calling to each other, a single note hoot, followed a couple of seconds later by a warbling hoot. It would be great to think these are additional to the Garthorne Rd owl, but I suppose their territories are large, especially in urban areas, so OTH could very likely be close enough to GR to form one territory.
I've heard him every few days since then, so assume he is sort of settled around here. Yes, agree it would be lovely if it was more than one lonely Mr. Tawny Owl. Fingers crossed.
