Would like to add my voice to Nikolarun -- Sunday laws are very out of date with regard to the way people live now. As someone who spent many long hours working retail in the US, I can say that working a long Sunday suited me just fine -- I could earn more and attend all of my university classes during the week. I find it hard to imagine a Divine Being would be offended by that. Similarly, being able to get shifts during the week from 3:30PM - 9:30PM in the store (regular retail, not grocery) was really good. How do people earn money after school when everything closes so early?
But if we are to be stuck with limited hours, I would prefer an opening until six, as we never plan our Sunday evening cookout until the last minute -- the weather is far to unpredictable!
Here in the UK, long gone are the days when you earn more working on a Sunday. At one time it was double time, or even time and a half. Now it's just normal pay and part of your normal contract. Another reason not to work Sundays.
I feel sorry for those families who have no idea what it was like to be at home with the family all day on a Sunday when all the shops were closed. The one day of the week when the whole family could all sit down and have a meal together.
12-6 works much better. The old opening hours would see customers turning up after 5pm not realising the store closed then.
When I've walked past between 5-6pm on a Sunday, customers have been using it well.
For those requiring earlier opening hours, Bell Green and Dog Kennel Hill open at 11am.
The change to the noon opening time was really inconvenient for us. We like to get a fresh baguette for lunch on Sundays and are really hungry by the time the store opens. Don't tell me there are other options - the small Sainsburys at HOP, although nearer, sells their baquettes at 10p more, which is an outrage in my opinion (yeah, yeah, first world problems). I'd love to see it go back to 11.
When it was two of us, we would wake up late and only make it to Sainsbury's by midday, but as we have our little one now, each day starts for us at 6-7am (he doesn't care whether it's Sunday or Tuesday
), so the earlier working hours would suit us better! These days by 6pm all three of us dream of sleeping, not shopping

Am keeping all the nicer options to myself as requested but you go from Honor Oak to Forest Hill and back to save 10p on a baguette. Please tell me that you walk or cycle this journey!
Snobbery or slobbery, call it what you may, but my time has value too, so am rarely inclined to make a long journey to save pennies. While principles apply im sure, a small version of a large store suffers some of the same problems as an independent. So costs are always going to be a little higher. Convenience costs.
Back to the actual store, like I say, unlikely to affect me really, but opening before midday makes more sense. Its groceries, not a pub or gambling establishment.
I see Sainsbury's have removed a number of "normal" tills and replaced them with Beelzebubs Spawn (those horrible self service tills. Grrrrrr
They apparently did it all overnight last night.
I have to say, as we increasingly shop 'little and often' rather than spending all of Sunday at Sainsbugs Sydenham, I quite like the self-service check-outs. They can be a bit temperamental, though, I admit ("Unexpected item in the bagging area." "IT'S A BAG!!!!!!!"

Have they removed the four from the far end and put the rest together? This will ensure only one member of staff is required for all ten self-service tills.
They did that with the East Dulwich Sainsbury's self-service tills, but added staff tills together.
As far as I can recall, yes, they've grouped the self-service tills, rbmartin. I think there's now 10 of them (were there 2x4 before?).
I'm not sure what that means for staffed tills but at a guess they're down by one or two. Not sure on that score, though. I didn't do an audit - I was just astonished at the speed of the installation!
On a completely separate point, I noticed that both car park ticket machines at FH Sainsbury's are currently out of action, and have been for a few days. Does that mean free parking or are we required to use that parking app which has not exactly been praised to the skies? Not sure if I've been compliant or lucky!
The ones nearest the door were 2x3.
