I've just walked psat Ewart Road as I cut through the back streets from Honor Oak to Forest Hill. A large area around Ewart Road has been cordoned off. There were about four uniformed police in the area, four plain clothes, and a forensics bloke in pale blue overalls and plastic bag-style shoes.

There was also one of those workmen's tents as used by gas companies etc. I don't know what's under that but I can't help suspecting that it's a body.

Does anybody know what's going on?

Yes, apparently it was a body. I cycled past early that morning (or, actually, was diverted around) and was told that a man had died of head injuries. It was suspicious (clearly) but they had to make sure that he hadn't died as a result of falling. Never heard any more about it.
