My it was a quiet weekend on SE23, even Baggy Dave is thinking of relocating to Norfolk where there must be more action. Can't be due to the football.

Reading an article in the Grauniad that mentioned the Scorpions single "The Wind of Change" and going back for older readers Lone Stars "Bells of Berlin" (both of course an anathama to an old punk like BD) I started to think about bridging the gap between us in UDB and those of you elsewhere in SE23. To cut to the chase I believe that originally there were plans to have a footbridge over the tracks where the Devonshire Road nature reserve is. Anyone out there vaguely interested in this subject?

Easier to be destructive (ie knock a wall down) than build briges I suppose.

There already is a footbridge between Sydenham Park and Dacres Road.

We lowly peasants from lower Forest Hill do have some rights of access to UDB.

Yes I well remember this suggestion and would be very welcome
I confirm that there is and has been for more years than I can remember a footbridge connecting Syd Pk and Dacres Rd called the German Bridge.
Very useful it has been over the years

There's been a bridge connecting Syd Pk to Dacres since the turn of the last century.

I am sure you are correct. I only go back to 49 and my memory not as far as that.
I know the original German Church was ironically the first building locally to be bombed in 1940.

And we've discussed this footbridge and the German church. Please pay attention dear listeners - Devonshire road, cutting off a corner for walkers.

A footbridge at that location would be great, but no minor engineering undertaking - have a look at the Brockley Jack footbridge.

The ground conditions on both sides are fairly poor too, with lots of disturbance from the old canal and then the LBSC railway.

Not a bad idea for a campaign though. I'd like a lighthouse, tower, lookout, folly thing on the top of Forest Hill too - I always look for the grotty old antenna on the way home, a proper eddystone style tower would be good.

To be honest I live on Devonshire Rd side of the proposed bridge and I cannot think when I would need to use the bridge.
Only reason I can think of is to cut 10 mins of walk to Catford.
Probably money could be better spent elsewhere

Would good to have a clock tower again for the station.

Well that was a complete waste of time, half the posts were half a mile in Sydenham direction, and the other half, well.....

I don't need to wish for a folly as we have one already in Horniman heights. We could do with a pub, station and post office and a foodbridge cutting off the corner would save half a mile of the walk to the BHT

I can already look out at two other towers (BBC and ITV) that I like to imagine are just like a Parisian vista

Foodbridge...lashed together with spagehetti?

When singer Melanie (Oh Happy Day and Look What They Done To My Song Ma) visited Crystal Palace she said the BBC tower was the biggest phallic symbol she'd seen.

Well. This is turning into an interesting thread. We are onto food and sex now!

Baggydave, why do you want a footbridge? Surely, this might let the unwashed from lower SE23 enter UDB.
