Does anyone know what the development is on the old Texaco site? So far three men have taken weeks to excavate a very large hole and the edge of a neighbouring garden has fallen into it! Does anyone monitor health and safety of building sites for the passing public?

Yes, the Council will take complaints initially and anything serious will get taken up by the HSE. If you have the contractors details contact them too- they will also take complaints very seriously. They don't always know what goes on on their sites especially if they subcontract work.

You can report problems online at this link:

http://www2.lewisham.gov.uk/lbl/transport/report_i nfo.asp

It sounds as if the site is dangerous and needs immediate attention.

This might be the telephone number to call:

0208 314 6789

for the Health & Safety Executive.

Does anyone have any more news on this? Living pretty much next door I'm keen to find out. The work seems to be in fits and starts!

What number Stanstead Road is it?
You should be able to search for the planning permission and get more information.

Last time I looked they had closed the pavement nearby and put cones in the road to keep traffic away. Presumably there were concerns the pavement might collapse!

Bound to be housing. Council will not be happy until every square foot of Forest Hill is covered with living accommodation. Does not seem to matter that no real jobs here. What about our lovely green spots

It is, of course, a block of flats: http://www4.lewisham.gov.uk/acolnet/ACOLLATEDOCS/1 2271_1.pdf

10 flats, 4 maisonettes, 13 car parking spaces, 14 bicycle spaces

The original planning application number is 05/59428/X and there's a recent one for submission of facing materials, contamination report etc: DC/06/63609/FT. The latter has documents attached.

So much for encouraging people without cars
13 spaces for 14 units. Who is the unlucky one.??

I live one road away from this site and walk past daily. It has been a complete mess for months, with a neighbouring garden, and now pavement, collapsing into the site. I have regularly seen workmen without hard hats working on site, although work is extremely slow. Shouldn't someone be overseeing the work from a health and safety perspective?

Is it possible that Stanstead Road may collapse into the site?

Hurstbourne Road is now closed as it slips into the hole, and the site gets worse and worse. I can't believe no-one from Lewisham council is doing anything about the mess on this site for months on end now, I feel really sorry for the people who have to live next to it (particularly the house whose entire garden has fallen into the hole!).

What is this trend for building flats that look like ski lodges? I know we are on a hill, but do we really need buildings that look like exploded sheds?

I quite like the wood effect. I think it's an improvement on the nasty cheap red brick from the 90's, and more sympathic to the area...anyway what's the problem with a little shiplap in your life?

Haylands,

Only one small problem with a wooden building building - it burns easily.

Remember the Great Fire of London in 1666?

I totally agree with you Pat. Surely the planning permission did not extend into the surrounding pavement and road? There are now some signs that point out the danger of deep excavations but the whole enterprise does not inspire confidence. Whenever they pump out rainwater from the site it leaves a trail of mud up Hurstbourne and into the sewers - are the builders paying anything to o Thames Water like the rest of us for the upkeep of the drains? Please tell me that the Council are involved.

I've been told that the problems have arisen from the contractors having to remove the old storage tanks from the Texaco station that was on the site, which were down quite deep.

You'd have thought they would have compensated for this though?

For a big enough project there are only ever two blokes working on it at one time and they both seem to just stare down the hole scratching their heads!

I suspect they have removed more than the tanks for the surrounding area to fall into the site.

I think I saw a mechanical excavator down there one day.

I've kept a close eye on the proceedings from the comfort of the bus stop every morning (until it was condemned as unsafe). My observations are as follows; The tanks were removed from the site by another company and the excavations filled in some time ago. When the current work began, there was deep drilling and underpinning of the ajoining buildings by a specialist company, presumably sub-contracted (they wore hard hats which is something of a novelty for this site). They departed and the couple of blokes referred to above appeared on the scene and got it to where it is now (on a good day I counted six workers). Makes you wonder if they ever surveyed the site before starting work - perhaps if they had done some more underpinning (I think this is what it is called - my building site education is wholly down to this one project) they might have avoided it caving in.

Yesterday I couldn't even walk past on Stanstead Road as the traffic cones protecting the pedestrian area of the road had blown all over the road along with bits of fencing and a lot of mud! The chaos continues.......

The responsible department seems to be Building Control.
Tel: 020 8314 8233

I am trying to find out if they have inspected.

A Lewisham Council engineer (Ranjit Bhogal) has inspected the site to deal with the immediate danger.
His telephone number is 020 8314 8218.

Just a quick update folks.

Having lived by this Landfill site for the past couple of years, I'm happy to report that the part-time builders? Have laid the metal rods to the second half of the site which is to be concreted for the underground car park.

Hopefully, and perhaps finally, we might see progress increase sharply!

Although, perhaps my new year optimism maybe a little too much......

Just in time to stop the lamppost falling in!....see the builders have now taken down the sign with their company details on it from the fencing...wonder why?

Not O'REILLY by any chance?

Fawlty Towers seems to spring to mind!

Anyone got any idea how far they're getting behind the very secretive fencing, no doubt put up to stop me complaining to the council constantly about the state of the site? The bottom of Hurstbourne Road still hasn't been sorted out, they seem to be using it as an extra storage area! And the pavement is often covered in wet cement, which messes up my shoes. Anyone peeked through the fence?

I would advise you not to go anywhere near the fence in case you fall in the hole.

Or gravity finally does its bit for the leaning lamp-post. The bus stop is now back in use but I'm a bit wary of the wonky paving stones and the mud on the pavement and that they may eventually start to work on the next storey - I wouldn't want to venture near without a hard hat. It's amazing that they able to have taken over the end of Hurstbourne as an extension of the site and with such a slow rate of progress, the council should probably put up some permanent cul de sac signs.

Not sure, it seems top secret since 'the fence went up' however I have noticed that the three useless blokes who stood around all day have been replaced with one very serious bloke who looks like he means business

Wow there appear to be foundations down at last, maybe there will be a whole building here later this year? Nice to see they are still being allowed to use the end of Hurstbourne Road as a dumping ground
