Lewisham Council is undertaking a survey to obtain users and resident views on the south circular.
Can people, please visit the website and complete the survey?

This is the reference for the survey:

It would be interesting if people shared their views with this forum as well as with Lewisham Council.

These are my submissions:

Problems:
Too many sets of traffic lights on London Road, especially the new set between Honor Oak and Taymount Rise.

Turning onto the South Circular from Canadian Avenue. Traffic lights are immediately against you limiting the number of cars that can turn.

Too many bus stops on Stanstead Road (between Catford and Brockley Rise) making the bus service very slow.

Catford railway bridges. Road is too narrow with too many roads joining over a short space.

Difficult to get in lane to turn left from London Road into Devonshire Road at the traffic light due to the bus stop being too far into the road. The other carriageway should be reduced in width to allow for a small filter lane for cars turning right into Dartmouth Road.

Solutions (where not obvious):
Combine the entry road for Halfords and Wicks at Catford.

Is it possible to reduce access to the South Circular at Catford Bridge from the roads joining from the north?

Reopen Catford Broadway to cars (one way), to bypass the South Circular and the bus stops outside the town hall.

"Turning onto the South Circular from Canadian Avenue. Traffic lights are immediately against you limiting the number of cars that can turn."
This is my fault. It is the solution to the problem of cars from Canadian Avenue blocking the road in front of the traffic lights because Catford Road is blocked and then moving forward when the lights are red as Catford Road clears, risking hitting pedestrians crossing at the junction, who are under the impression that the cars will not move.

I made the comment that the entire length of the road is totally unsuitable as a major orbital route, and suggested scrapping the concept of the South Circular and reverting it to a series of local roads.

Whitefoot Lane and Southend Lane were originally built as dual carriageways to replace the South Circular.

By contrast, the North Circular is now six-lane dual carriageway for most of its length. Presumably over the years there have been similar plans mooted for its southern counterpart?

See here http://www.cbrd.co.uk/histories/ringway2/ for a history of 'Ringway 2', the motorway that would have replaced the South Circular.

I remember about 15 or so years ago a plan to put a tunnel from the Dulwich Grove Pub to Stansted Road thereby avoiding most of SE 23 but at an amazing costs.
To no ones surprise did not get very far

In the late 1980's or early 1990's the government spent millions of pounds investigating and consulting on plans to improve the South Circular. They went as far as emptying the houses in Plassy Road, Catford so it could be widened. It was proposed the South Circular would be re-routed through the ugly council staff car park behind Laurence House. The council have been holding to the latter idea for about 20 years and are attempting to revive the plan with TfL. I can't remember exactly what was planned for Forest Hill, widening Stanstead Road may have been a proposal.

The road is allegedly planned to be diverted the other side of Laurence House and across a corner of the playing fields at Canadian Avenue. I hope it happens.

Ken Livingstone will not be happy until he has extended his congestion charge zone right up to the South Circular. This will cause gridlock on the South Circular as people drive round it to avoid paying the charge.

Main problem with roads in south london is railway crossings.
Does not matter how many more lanes you put in if these are not increased.
Only one between Honor Oak P and Syd Road and we all know where that is.
Before someone comes back and says what about the german bridge. I often use it but not really any good for vehicles

What's the German bridge then? Was that launched by a crack party of Waffen-SS sappers in preparation for a panzer invasion of SE23, but fatally weakened by a joint attack by Forest Hill Home Guard and Sydenham WI, and ence unsuitable for vehicular traffic ever since?

Speaking as someone who has lived in the area 57 years it has always been the German bridge as it is next to the German Church.
All the people I know who have lived here for years call it the same. You must be an incomer.?
Ironically the original German Church was the first building in Se 23/6 to be bombed in the war.

The German church and their community (is there still one?) is far more an interesting conversation than the South Circular. Sure Brian can correct me but I thought the community moved here in early 20th century and were responsible for some of the teutonic (spelling?) touches to the housing in the 'Thorpes' (Sydenham).

Yes The German Ambassador apparently had a country mansion on Sydenham Hill.
Tannsfeld Road is an example
The orig church was built in 1906 , destroyed in the war and rebuilt.

The German Church in Dacres Road, SE23, will be commemorating the centenary of the birth of their one-time Pastor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, this Sunday, 29 January at 11.00 am. The service will be in German.

Anyone interested should try putting "Dietrich Bonhoeffer" on a Google search.

I believe he was an active antifascist - as active as you could be in Germany in the late 30's - but eventually was killed by the Nazis. Is that correct?

Yes Roz , that is correct. He was very anti NAZI.
It is amazing how this post has changed from south circular to german history in the area.
I remember when I was learning German at Dacres Road School in the 60,s we attended the church for Christmas carol service.
On Sundays notice many people still attending services.
By the way Dietrich lived in Manor Mount and there is a plaque on the house.

That's just the sort of shabby trick those Nazis would try - bombing their own church (as Captain Mainwairing would have said). You would think you would have been safe sheltering in the German church!

I think the German community grew a lot when the Crystal Palace was being erected. Many worked there. And yes, the German Ambassador was the focal point of the community.

on a vaguely related note, is there any information about likely last train times when ELLX opens? I'm quite often on one of the last two trains leaving central london and they're always pretty rammed- a lot of people get off at Honor Oak Park, and i imagine the same is the case at Forest Hill. Having not lived in the area for long i don't know if this has come up before, what issues there are with noise etc for surrounding residences. However, later trains would make se23 a more attractive prospect for a lot of people, anything to avoid trial by night bus...

Hi Loz
No probs we all make mistakes.
It is strange that the German Church was the first place to be bombed although Dietrich was anti Nazi but of course aiming for the railway line.

Until recently there was a residential home at Crystal Palace that was originally set up for German people possibly before World War 1 and maintained its association with the German Embassy in London.
