Does anyone know whats happening about the condition of the road around the top of Taymount Rise? Just the other day, our taxi driver was forced to change his tyre as a result of the road. Do the council sort this out?

Why don't you complain to the council: http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/NewsAndViews/complainform.asp, and see what the response is.

See my post under the 'Taymount Rise - Road conditions' thread. The council still consider it a 'low priority' road, but can spend many thousands replacing all the pavements from Hornimans down to Barclays and also all around the area near Lewisham Leisure centre (which is still closed)

Reference to the council website shows that Taymount Rise doesn't even appear in the top 466 roads listed for resurfacing in the 2003/4 budget. Please go to the Lewisham website and register your protest via the online reporting facility

I have complained before using the Lewisham Council website and I should not have bothered. It appears they do not reply to emails - so you could well be wasting your time!

JR, I think you miss the point about comparing Taymount Rise to the work on the London Road sidewalks. Lewisham council is responsible for Taymount Rise, whereas London Road is maintained by Transport for London, and we should be quite pleased whenever TFL money comes our way, and for once pedestrians in the area are benefiting.

I live on Taymount Rise, and wasn't aware of the problem. Then again, I live at the bottom of the street and don't drive in any case so there probably was no reason for me to know. If people on the street feel that we're being inadequately provided for by the council, we should probably organise. I'm not too put out by the potholes, but I've had it up to my back teeth having to dodge race cars to get myself and my kid to the bus stop on the other side of London Road. If you support my effort to get a pedestrian crossing, I'll support your effor to get a bit of asphalt

Just an update on the pot holes in Taymount Rise.
The ones around the roundabout continue to get more in number, and the existing ones get larger and deeper. Some of them must be 2ft across and 6inches deep now. It is impossible to drive around the roundabout now without hitting most of them. Another one has appeared opposite the old church which someone has attempted to fill with a bit of asphalt. How much longer is the council going to ignore this. I suppose until someone has an accident and sues them!

I agree, they are getting worse. They are bad enough to negotiate in a car, but completely unsafe on a motorbike - I have had my front wheel slip into one on more than a few occations. The road would be safer if it were a dirt track.

I notice that the road still has not been scheduled for maintenance by the council, you can see the list at: http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/transport/documents/Appendix%20E%20Provisional%20Resurfacing%20Programme%202003%20-%204.pdf

Also this might be of interest, it includes the scoring system they use to prioritise roads for repair:
http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/transport/documents/ResurfBoroReport2003.pdf

If you haven't seen it before, there is an online form for reporting road problems on the Lewisham website. Perhaps if everone affected by the issue were to fill it out they might take some notice:
http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/transport/report_info.asp

I'm going to try and take some photos over the next week or so to accompany a letter of complaint, but won't hold my breath.

I'm impressed to see Jim Dowd MP chipping in on some of the topics here. I wonder if he might take a detour up Taymount Rise next time he's on the London Road to take a look.

I complained to the council through their website. I received a very courteous reply, which although promising to send someone to inspect the roundabout, said the road wasn't on the list for the next year. I thought that was that.

But today I received another email and - gasp - following the inspection, they managed to 'identify'* some funds and will be resurfacing the roundabout and a short bit of road leading to it in a few weeks' time! Woo hoo!

So, writing to the council does work. Don't assume that everyone else has already done it or that it's pointless - give it a go if your road is dangerously pot-holed.

*this conjures up the image of sacks of money sitting around and someone saying 'you know, i think that might be the 'funds' thing people keep talking about'.

So eventually complaining does work. It could also be something to do with the emails that I sent to our LOCAL councillors last week.
For future information these are:-

Peter Dawson
Email cllr_peter.dawson@lewisham.gov.uk

David Whiting
Email cllr_dave.whiting@lewisham.gov.uk

Susan Wise
Email cllr_susan.wise@lewisham.gov.uk

I have been reporting the road conditions through the web site for months and have never had a reply. Its interesting to note that the web site says that the council will attempt to repair potholes by the end of the NEXT working day.

I received replies from two of the councillors on the same day saying that they had spoken to the appropriate people.

I am not claiming all the credit for finally getting something done but as Rebecca says, constant badgering does work eventually.

Well done everyone!

I'd just like to make one point about the road works along major roads through the Borough such as the South Circular. They are the responsibility of TfL, which is part of the Greater London Authority clutch of organisations. Lewisham has no control over these works and does not fund them. We could not transfer funds from these road works to our own local roads.

Your three ward councillors share local residents concerns that these works often seem disorganised, and sometimes unnecessary. We have taken these points up with TfL repeatedly.

Likewise, my colleague Peter Dawson has been very active in attempting to persuade TfL to improve the traffic planning of the South Circular between Forest Hill station and Dulwich Common.

If you have concerns about these works, try writing to Len Duvall, who is the GLA representative for this area.

The resurfacing at the Taymount Rise roundabout is now complete. This has been carried out as part of Lewisham borough's road resurfacing programme, but also by listening to the concerns and complaints of local residents around the condition of our roads. Any feedback on the issue is most welcome.
