I can think ten places that could be used to display local Art.

1) Sainsburys unused shops.

2) Outside WH Smith on the wide pavement.

3) Outside the job centre

4) Outside the Post Office

5) Horniman Museum, after all, they are the 'hub' of the Community.

6) Outside the fire station in Stanstead Road.

7) The Station. Could even have a comp where the prize could be a display at the new station.

8) I like social art. EG, Place a marking /person on every paving stone in the centre of Forest Hill that has been the scene of a crime. (Great photo op' for a budding turner prize nominee)

9) Hang something contraversial (check spelling!) from the railway bridge. Might even lighten up the Gateway!

10) Or.............. we could have a community arts festival this summer, on a sunday, and turn some of the empty shops canvas heaven.

Well, I think we'd all be interested. Perhaps the creative folk of Havelock Walk could get together and put some sort of joint thing on? An extension (permananent?) perhaps of the periodic open studio event.

I'm not so into the "crime scene" idea (No 8), though. It'll just frighten the grannies.

Let's not get too carried away with it, Kevin!
Just bear in mind the the main purpose of the gallery would be to enable artists to earn a living by selling their work. Any happening or environmental, conceptual, narrative, social etc. art is by its own nature difficult to sell (unless you record it either in video or photographs). My opinion is that at this stage in Forest Hill there is very little market for it. Also we need to be realistic. Projects like the ones you suggest require money. I am not saying it is impossible but the gallery would need to establish itself first in order to embark on more challanging projects. If you are an artist or you know any artist working in those media I would love to hear from you/them.

I am currently putting together a proposal to submit to the council. In a nutshell below is what I would like to do if the council is willing to provide a space and cover basic expenses:

- Provide a permanent exhibition space to artists working in all media (painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery, jewellery, photography etc.)
- Sell their work to generate income for the artists and for the gallery
- Develop a programme of art-related activities

That's all I can tell you now.

I strongly believe that an art gallery in Forest Hill will greatly increase the profile of this area and will bring immense benefit to the community. The Horniman is a fantastic museum but in its own sector. If the council is not willing to help I may approach the Horniman and see what can be done. Perhaps they may have a spare space.

In answer to Bruna's comments.
What about Havelock Walk as this seems to be the "centre" for art in Forest Hill and I believe that they have the occasional open days and maybe they need to have more.

When innitiated in the mid ninties, the now annual Forest Hill Day was a community's day of celebration after a localised battle with the Local authority with regards to the future of the Victorian Pools in Dartmouth Road.

The Council were due to close them and people said 'NO'. The Council changed tact, the people were victoriuous and so Forest Hill Day was born.

If you artists think that you have something to celebrate, and from what Bruna is saying, you most certainly have, then you must have your space at this years festival in the Summer.

Pop along to see June and put your name down for a display area.

Forest Hill's very own 'Art in the Park'

Me likes........................!

Ernie, the open day(s) are an excellent initiative but it will not bring to them the business they deserve. The art gallery will offer a permanent (365 days a year) space with an exhibition schedule to enable them to show their new work on a regular basis. The gallery will also look after the advertising and PR. Artists are notoriously hopeless at promoting themselves(I speak from experience, of course). Talent and PR skills do not seem to go together. You can't have everything in life!

Kevin, all your suggestions are brilliant. If the gallery project takes off I could apply for grants either to the Council or the Arts Council to materialise your ideas and sponsor more events.

Also, anyone who has a serious interest in the art gallery project and would like to get involved, please let me know.

I take on board what you say and agree.

However, you will never have a 'totally supported' gallery unless you take your art to the local people in the first instance.

It will be clearer and quicker to achieve your goal providing you make all concerned aware of yourselves in the first place.

I am willing to assist with your marketing and PR

Dear Kevin,

I am pleased to see that our discussions about art now continue in another section of the forum. I have since left London for personal reasons, hence my silence, and am back to Italy. You are very much involved in all aspects of Forest Hill life and you have brilliant ideas. Why do you not get together with some other art lovers and see my project through to completion? Although I do not live in Forest Hill any longer I have a strong attachment to that area. Also from a commercial point of view Forest Hill is the place to be for new types of business. I am sure that an art gallery will thrive. Let me know if you are going to give serious thoughts to the project. All my advice is free of charge!

I am now working on the same project in Bologna, Italy.

Please say hello to Forest Hill on my behalf!

As Project Manager at Sydenham Hill Wood Local Nature Reserve (5 min walk from the Horniman Museum) I would be happy to hear any ideas/suggestions you might have for an art event/project which could be held there.
