Would any fellow se23 residents be interested in starting a book club to meet perhaps once a week? And, before you ask Dave, no, books covering the local music scene would not be on the reading list.

Thanks for your response megan and Mrs H. To make it work, I reckon we'll need at lease five or six people. Anyone else interested?

Good an insult, nothing worse than not being talked about. Maybe you could ask the revamped Sainsburys to set this up - wouldn't want them to miss out on an opportunity to monopolise a local market.

I would be keen. I went to one at Bar Equal last year which was interesting, but being in a bar everyone smoked like crazy - I couldn't stay for the whole session. Perhaps a non smoking venue.?

I'd be interested. I was a member of one last year but people kept dropping out.

Just received an email from Michael at the Dartmouth Arms who has suggested his place as a venue for a book club.

He has suggested offering a section of his restaurant (our choice smoking/non smoking - they prefer the latter which is fine with me as I don't smoke). At present only Tuesday night is viable for him and there would be a limit of about 10 people, although I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. He would not charge a hire fee and
would offer a discount on food if required.

Thanks for getting in touch, Michael. The DA would be an ideal venue in my opinion. What does everyone else think?

Bearing in mind Michael's comments, I would suggest that we meet once a month on a Tuesday at the DA. What does everyone else think?

Jack: I'm very interested in your idea of the bookclub and I think I could bring some good suggestions to the table on underrated reading material (the Haynes manual on the Ford Capri MkII and the Observers Book of British Automobiles 1979 edition come immediately to mind).

A couple of thoughts on timing and venue though. Tuesday night is a popular night for evening classes or sports with a lot of folk and many may have long-standing commitments elsewhere. I'd put the book club more into a leisure activity bracket and would have thought a Wed or Thurs a good night. Or am I just imagining everybody's industriousness early in the week? The other thought was that it might be more convivial to meet in a pub-type setting (i.e. soft seats to sprawl on, not getting hungry surrounded by folk eating) to swap views over a quiet pint. Of course if the DA were to bring in Harvey's of Lewes/St Peter's Ale and reinstall the bar billiards I will do an immediate u-turn.

Or how about the Telegraph? It's not especially smoky and has the significant advantage of being on the south side of the railway tracks. And as with the Parisian left-bank shouldn't us south-siders be fostering our end of town as Forest Hill's free-thinking hub?

Glad to hear that you're interested, TJ. Not so sure about your reading suggestions, but take your points re. venue and meeting time. Either the DA or Telegraph would be fine with me - the Telegraph having the added advantage that Dave and his posho friends are unlikely to gatecrash our meetings and start heckling us. I'll wait to hear what everyone else thinks and go from there.

Jack, I'd be interested in joining, and the Telegraph would suit me fine. So, what are we waiting for?

definitely Telegraph and not the DA? The DA has the advantage of being near the station.

So, is this on or off, and where are we meeting?
Jack, you need to take charge as nothing will happen until you do.

I think our first book review should be ' Hard Grindings' by Sir Ian McKellen.

If anyone is interested but would rather not disclose their email address on the forum, se23.com is able to help.

Email bookclub@se23.com before the end of May quoting your forum username and (for confirmation) the email address you used to register on the forum. At the end of May se23.com will send a group email to circulate the addresses received.

From that point you should be able to make arrangements between yourselves, and if required se23.com will be pleased to provide a free page on the site to advertise past and present meetings etc.

Can I suggest that you start with Chris Hutt's "Death of the English Pub", published around 30 years ago. A prediction of a future Blighty devoid of the traditional boozer; very close to home in the Hornimans area. Will no doubt lead to deep amd meaningful debate.

Book should be available at car boot sales, or from your nearest bearded real ale drinker. Also see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ca tegory=72319&item=8304585238&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Perhaps Ken Livingstone could be persuaded to divert the South Circular along Woodvale, which might encourage Wetherspoons to decamp there from London Road, the knock-on effect being that the Capitol could re-open as a cinema

At last someone with a sense of humour! I'd actually divert it through East Dulwich, Peckham and coming out somewhere by Catford. I don't really know whether I'd want a Wotherspoons as a local. Actually I do know, I don't

And as this web site seems to have gone to sleep thanks to any Charlton fans in the area. I O U.

Another thought, when I first moved to the area, sometime before the war (that is the Britpop war) there was talk about digging a tunnel from the Lordship Lane junction all the way to Catford Bridge for the Sarf Circ. Think FH would be very different if this had gone ahead. I'll have to ask the Mayor about this when he has a meeting with our posh estate.

Yeah just imagine the whole of London Road from the Horniman down to the station could be a huge drive through fast-food-and-nail-bar-shop. Deep Joy

Roz unfortunately Jack aka Newman tried to set this up a little while ago and then got banned from the site, I myself don't think a book club will be set up, but I understand Bar Equal in Honor Oak hold one weekly not sure on the details though. hope this helps.

Just a reminder - only a few days to go to add your name to the email list for the book club.

Email bookclub@se23.com before the end of May quoting your forum username and (for confirmation) the email address you used to register on the forum. At the end of May se23.com will send a group email to circulate the addresses received.

Thanks, Sherwood.

I did attend the bar equal club a few years ago, which I thought was a great idea, however the book group attendees were all heavy smokers well,it is a bar) and as I'm asthmatic I couldn't stick it out. Also, very few people had actually read the book so it became a bit of a general chat- not bad if you want to meet people however.

Was enough interest expressed on setting one up in Forest Hill? It might be worth kicking off on this website first of all to establish interest, and then see how it goes. We seem to have spent 18 months discussing the merits of having a club, only stopping to mention one book!

Baggydave, would you like to kick off with a short precis of your recommendation, 'Death of the English Pub'?
