My friend runs an Italian Delicatessen in South West london and is thinking of opening a second shop - perhaps around Forest Hill. I would be really interested in knowing what people think? |

Just amke sure you get a shop on the right site; some bits of the area seem a bit forlorn and jinxed. I'd use it though. |

Maybe suggests he looks at Honor Oak as a potential site. There are some good sites currently vacant and would be a real gem for the area |

Fantastic idea, but I agree with earlier comment re position; I'd suggest near Dartmouth Arms would be a good choice. Good luck. |

Near the Dartmouth Arms would be a great location and I would be delighted to see such a business here. (And would use it!) |

I'd have thought somewhere near to Forest Hill station could pick up a lot of passing trade from us commuters - me for one |

Oh yes - I'd definitely use it, and as others say, somewhere near FH station would be ideal |

Beware of the strong local competition from the established East Dulwich deli nearby and the deli counter at the redeveloped sainsbury's when it opens. |

Agree with Nate - the East Dulwich one seems to do a roaring trade, which suggests FH would support one if the formula was right. Les |

The East Dulwich Deli is faux Italian. The genuine article would be much better. There would be no competition from a supermarket `deli' counter. It is clear from the number of messsages that opening a deli here in Forest Hill (near the Dartmouth Arms) would be a fantastic idea. |

Yes, it could set up in that large empty store next to the post office. Much better than another betting shop or an Arcade. |

nope i think the arcade has got the go ahead so will have to find another property. the shop near the funky clothes shop is free and looks quite big! |

Go for the old burnt out Kebab shop right next to the Station. Lots of passing trades, from us commuters and there's even the opportunity for drivers to stop (albeit briefly) in the car park. It would definitely be an asset to the area. |

The shop next to the clothes shop.....isn't that the old funeral parlour????? I guess that means there will be a fridge in situ though! |

What about the old bank the other side of the post office? There would be more potential to combine a coffee shop. |

Wood Vale would be a good place. There's a small parade of shops, good butcher (that's not very vegan is it says TJ) decent ex post office with pick and mix sweeties, an independent offie and an array of interesting cars. An ecletic shop would suit this fine, particularly as the local pub closed down a few years ago and the station in 1954. But passing trade off the No 63 bus. Also Linda Barker would probably come over from her place on Underhill road (fascinating fact is she is never seen). This would also distract us from the fly tipping of Christmas trees outside Camberwell New Cemetary (ironic, christmas tree to celebrate good will and peace on earth sort of stuff and then dump it on the street - but not worth a separate what has gone wrong with FH thread). The Italian deli in Sydenham was excellent but shut down years ago presumably because the area isn't posh enough. The one at the bottom of Brixton Road is good but not exactly convenient for us. |

Fly tipping outside the cemetary? have you seen the bottle banks in Langton Rise, today we have on the Menu, * Old microwave * old carpets And that old chestnut -- wine bottles. People are far too lazy to put in the banks, as it's been too much hassle to take them out of the boot of the Volvo estate. Not so long before Christmas, two tonnes of builders rubble including old radiators and broken glass were dumped in the road and blocking the pavement. It's getting worse not better! |

Agreed, both parts of Langton Rise suffer from fly tipping (the SE22 and SE23 side for those of you who are interested) - and like you I am amused and amazed at people's mentality (obviously not from round our posh estate way). The Christmas trees were particularly poignant as my previous comment pointed out. As there are only a few houses in the area it's no doubt coz the area is not overlooked. But as this is supposed to be a 'what's good about SE23' let's avoid a thread and leave the slagging off of our posh estate to envious types like Newman and Toffee and look forward to the opening of the new Deli. |

Anyone else think that opening the new deli near the posh estate would be a fatal mistake? The place is obviously cursed when it comes to opening a business, probably because people are put off by the prospect of being confronted by badminton playing, veggie beer drinking old codgers who used to be on the TV. Not a pretty sight. The deli should be in the vibrant side of town where it is much more likely to be appreciated. |

Newman - I will admit that things are quite nice behind the Horniman, though a Deli needs people. Just look at the train in the morning and the evening - hordes of bruschetta loving communters, all going through forest hill. They can even pop into the arcade for a go on the fruit machines at the same time! |

LOL I have got to say all this 'posh estate' debate made me actually start posting on the boards. Very amusing banter Do you know on Woodvale (the perfect place for the Deli) we now seem to have three shops next door to each other that sell practically the same items! How they survive I don't know! Just think how many deli's we could cram in! Or even how many new Moore Park Taverns!!! Get the Salami and Fettachini on Rye lined up BaggyD A |
