I've heard in the past in other boroughs that shop owners / businesses can recieve grants from the council to improve the outward appearance of their property. They all conform to some general *attractive standard*(??) providing an aesthetic constant to the area. The shops on the High St aren't the prettiest and the fact that we have A205 running straight through it doesn't help. Are there any councillors out there who can comment on this?

There is a really good example in Forest Gate (I think - out that way anyway). Decent buildings like Dartmouth Road but looked very scruffy due to alterations to shop fronts, mismatched signage etc etc. Got a good refurb with the shop keepers chipping in part of the costs (which didn't end up being too much in the end) and now wouldn't disgrace Harrogate or Cheltenham, although the shops themselves are still very basic chiipies, newsagents etc.

The launderette was what brought this to my attention (no offence).
