I have just moved to forest hill from Lambeth. Lambeth council refuse service made weekly collections of recyclable material. I cannot find any reference to Lewisham council doing this on the council's website. Do they collect bottles/paper etc. or do we have to take these to a recycling bank? It looks like there is one behind sainsbury's from the map on the council website, is that right?

Hope this helps.

They collect paper from your doorstep (you should have one of those green boxes - if not you can ting the council and ask for one). Everything else, you will need to take to be recycled - bottle, can and clothes bank are situated at various spots around Forest Hill but the biggest is probably in the car park of the Sainsbury's Savacentre (opposite the petrol station)

On a related topic, is there anywhere apart from the Lewisham waste recycling centre that would recycle computers, monitors, TVs etc? I woudl like to donate some old stuff to charity, but of course charity shops don't take electrical items...

This is an update on the posting from 'Me' on 02 July...

I've had a Political flyer/newletter delivered today and one item said, '...that since August you can put cans, glass bottles and jars in the green box as well as paper and card.' This is delightful news.

I went to the Lewisham Council link that Kevin posted above and searched around for about 10 minutes but found no mention of it.

Two questions to YOU, out there in Inter-Web-land are:

1.) Did you know this?
2.) If you did, how did you find out?

1) Yes, I did.
2) I used Google to search the Lewisham site (far more productive than using their own search) and turned up this link:

There is a British Heart Foundation shop on the Old Kent Road which takes all sorts of electrical items, including computers.

It's the nearest one I know of.

Thank you 'Styx' for your posting. And I'm enlightened now to the advantage of Google over Lewisham's web search. Kind Regards, Rob

Although I really do appreciate being able to put bottles and tins along with paper and card in my green box, when will we be able to recycle plastics? The recycling bank down at Sainsbury's doesn't take plastics either.

And on a festive note, what happened to Christmas tree recycling? When I moved to Forest Hill 8 years ago there was a doorstep collection for a couple of years and after that I had to drive over to Sydenham Wells Park. I did this last year and nothing!! Come on Lewisham, some of us want to do our bit if we can!

The mini recycling centre off Tyson Road has a bin that takes plastic bottles. I called Lewisham some time ago to ask for a recycling box but it never arrived...

FYI, you can use Google's 'site' keyword to search within a website. I often use this because it's usually much better than the site's own search facilities. e.g. site:www.lewisham.gov.uk recycling - to search for recycling within the lewisham website (no space between 'site:' and the website)

I asked Lewisham's recycling officer info on plastic bottles recycling sites in FH. The following is his response. His email is[Patrick.Swift@lewisham.gov.uk].

There are many sites around the Forest Hill area. If you live around the Perry Vale part then we have estates recycling bins behind the Forest Hill train station (next door to the pay and display car park entrance).

Further down Perry Vale there are bins on Church Rise, whilst off there on Dacres Road we have bins on Inglemere Road (the base of each of the three blocks of flats there). Further down Dacres Road there are three more bins at Clairville Point (block of flats).

Off London Road we have several sets of bins on Park Hill and Eliot Bank whilst off Dartmouth Road there are bins on Derby Hill and Windley Close.

All these sets of bins will take plastic bottles.

Best wishes with your recycling efforts.

On the subject of recycling in SE23. I happened to see our binmen the other day ... and as I watched I saw the guy empty our green recycle box of papers etc into our wheelie bin and leave the bin by the kerb for the guys on the truck. Now it occurs to me to wonder why exactly I bother separating my rubbish if it all ends up emptied into the same bin truck !! Can anyone (councillors perhaps) enlighten me? I can't help thinking I'm wasting my time and effort, is this the case ??

Dear Jojo

I need to know a bit more about what you saw, so please email me on Cllr_Dave.Whiting@lewisham.gov.uk, ideally with a phone number.

You are not wasting your time recycling.

Thanks

Dear JoJo,

Our binmen empty all paper recycling from myself and neighbours into 1 wheelie-bin and then empty that into the recycling lorry. I presume this makes life easier than emptying all the green bins into the lorry individually. Could this be what you saw?

I've got to admit I have had similar experiences to Jojos'. I live in Ewelme Road. I've got really into recycling and as a result fill 2 green boxes and often carrier bags to, with paper etc to be recycled.

I leave it all by my wheelie bin to be collected on the appropriate day and like you, I've seen it go into the same truck as the contents of the wheelie bin.

As I have a recycling 'station' close-by I now try to take a bag with me on my way to work, to go in the relevant bank. (I presume the contents of those are dealt with abit more diligantly)

Most recently, I've not had my green bins empted at all and despite reported a missed collection a week last Wed'. The bins still sit outside overflowing.

It is such a shame that our efforts go to waste........

Hi folks,

Thanks for the response (Cllr Whiting I'll email directly) but what I saw was a binman emptying my green box into my wheelie bin and then leaving my wheelie bin at the edge of the kerb for the bin truck further down the road.

I just don't want to waste time segregating it all if it just ends up in the same place anyway!

I also see them empty everything into the wheelie bin and then into the truck, but was assured that this was a different collection as it was on a different day. They borrowed my wheelie bin to collect everyone elses recycled stuff and then returned it.
Is everyone aware that they now take bottles in the green boxes as well? Fine, apart from when they mix it all up together, how do they manage to filter out all the broken glass for recycling. It would make sense to have a separate collection bin for bottles and also cans.
