Forest Hill Billies were a ska/skiffle band, I last saw in the early 90's. They came out of the cow punk indie scene of mid 80s (men they couldn't hang, yeh yeh no, Hank Wangford, Yip Yip Coyote and Boothill Foot Tappers) and no doubt would play the numerous free festivals that went on in those days. Pretty sure that they were from Forest Hill as the name suggests.

Jive instructors were as the name suggests a bit more into bogie, think they were around these parts and I last saw them at the Amersham Arms over ten years ago.

Mutoid waste company were exactly that - they took scrap metal and welded it into wierd and wonderful sculptures. Can't remember if the scructures were mobile. Pretty sure that they were from SE23, last time I saw them was at Glastonbury before it got trendy.

If any of this is then please let me know, but as no-one is interested out there I am in the dark! Can't find much on google.

Last Mutoid Waste party that I attended was in Barcelona 1990 - I think that they gave up on the UK after the ant-rave legislation, Bright bill ect.

The Jivers still do an occasional gig, but they were more of a Brockley band. Bands evolve into other things, like this:

I'm told that various members of the Forest Hill Billies are now in Girls Aloud.

Not got very far in rejuvinating Forest Hill's once thriving indie music scene! Let's see if I can can kick start this thread. Disappointed that there has been no trading of insults as with other discussions.

Slim from the Forest Hill Billies was also in The Boothill Foot-tappers and is now in Slim's Cyder Co see www.cyder.demon.co.uk Think he is from this area
Hank Wangford is still probably alive and kicking in Wangford (his original group took there names from towns in suffolk where they lived, check out his autobiography)
For all you folkies out there we have a Nigel Eaton in the area, the country's best Hurdy Gurdy player, played with Page and Plant and now finishing off his career with Blowzabella (see www.blowzabella.com)
Cosmic Sausages web site interesting if a bit on in the wierd side (in terms of fringe)
I'll even do an interesting gigs update if there is anyone out there interested
Another bit of trivia for perhaps another forum. The Rub a dub club was a once famous comedy club at the once upon a time exciting Greyhound hotel in Sydenham (now another bland sports bar/pub chain). This was compared by a certain Vic Reeves (before he was famous). But he doesn't even acknowledge how the bit of London helped make him famous.
Maybe SE23/SE26 was a more interesting place in terms of the music and the arts in the 80s. I digress

Were any of these bands any good? It's all a bit before my time, I'm afraid, but the Cosmic Sausages and Forest Hill Billies? I'll be polite and suggest that they sound like something of an acquired taste. The fact that they sold no records is probably the main reason why few people have responded to your thread.

Jim, I don't think it matters whether they sold many records or not. It's just interesting to hear about the different characters who lived in the area.

Yep, The Forest Hill Billies were a truly happening band. I'm biased, though, - I was their guitarist and singer. I'm flattered that we're still remembered. We were a 14 peice ska/country/skiffle band with a big brass section, fiddle, accordian (Slim - he's from north London and still playing) Most of us were from Forest Hill. Never heard of Girls Aloud. We had fantastic gigs in the Greyhound (The Rub A Dub Club)- a superb comedy/music venue in the 80s. Jim - 'acquired taste'? - in fact IMHO we were the opposite - totally accessible. We do have some stuff on disc - anyone remember the '11 Mad In Lewisham' compilation of Lewisham bands? I agree with Cathy - we just weren't into selling records. Myself and the bass player are now in the Legendary John Atkinson Band - we're playing The Amersham on Tuesday 15th Feb - Come down. Found out the other day that The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band used to play The Bird In Hand (Before even my time). I do remember the Folk Club there in the seventies though.

Thanks for sharing that with us, Danny. Next week, Danny discusses his second favourite band of all time...Steps.

So stuff that up your armpits you unbelievers, it wasn't just a dream. Newman, Jack etc I expect plenty of adoration.

And Matt, I've just got off the floor ("I'm not worthy" etc!). Did John tip you off?

It was either you or the Jive Instructors who I saw supported by I Ludicrous (Preposterous tales....) - another story there but pretty tenuous SE23 connection. I know where I'll be going on Tues night. Also saw the Nutty Boys there (no they weren't a tribute, something more genuine), with Slim watching, dancing and probably playing support (mental note: must see his Cyder co band sometime).

And save the nonsense about Steps, Girls Aloud for another thread.

I'm so excited. Even more excited than last week when I hinted that the Crystal Palace High Level line was to be reopened. And this even tops seeing my mate Michael Blakes 7 Keating on East Enders (the vicar as I predictec)

Can't find out anything about the Legendary John Atkinson Band Matt, makes it a bit difficult trying to get friends interested! Perhaps I'll see my new virtual mates from this site there.

Did the Greyhound in late 80s to mid 90s, when Vic Reeves compared the comedy club. He denies any knowledge of this though, SE26 being even more down market than Deptford where he was known for cutting his teeth. Now there was a wonderful pub that has gone horribly downhill. But no machete attacks unlike further down the road.

Might see you there, Dave, if I can get away from work on time. I'll be the one downing alcopops and wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words 'I thought Dave was making it all up'.

There is a jam session every tuesday night at the Forest Hill hotel, which is normally attended by some very good musicians. The pub itself is a bit of a hole but the music is normally very good. A lot of styles but the blues seems to come out winning usually. Gary Sandford from the Joe Jackson band is a regular.

Careful, Andy, what with the bombshell that the Forest Hillbillies were not a figment of his imagination, one of his luvvie mates appearing in Eastenders and now your message, I fear that it's too much excitement for Dave to handle in the space of one week. BTW, Dave, did you go to the gig last night and, if so, a full report please.

It was a pleasant night, a modest turn out for only the 4th gig from the SE23/SE26 legends. Disappointed by the low turn out from SE23.com regulars but almost made up be the presence of the famous Jed Dimochowski. I'll let Matt tell you more but pehaps he may wish to come to the FH Hotel - I'm (seriously) trying to arrange a charity gig for colleagues (foolishly IMHO) running the marathon

Oh I forgot, being a reactionary old foggie I obviously don't work so have no colleagues

Granted, not quite SE23, but think I've seen you mention Brockley's Cosmic Sausages before, Baggy. Used to know Simon quite well, but haven't seen him in years. Terrific bloke and a very entertaining band. Here's their website for the latest news: www.cosmicsausages.com

There is loads of local music talent in Forest Hill - a surprising amount. So many great local bands. I would mention some, but cannot for fear of deletion. Local hip hop and folk seem to be the two strongest genres, which aren't as strange bedfellows as they first appear to be.

Name away, Mark. Surely this site is about promoting Forest Hill, as well as raising agendas of concern. It would be good to hear about up and coming local musical talent ( ok, the merits are a matter of opinion), just as it is great to hear about local drama productions, arts events etc. Let's hear em.

All on-topic if specific to SE23 and not just promotion that could be read anywhere. If in doubt, email us first.

Think I also posted on the Rockin site. Cosmic sausages played the Brockley Max fest a few weeks ago. But just as important found a sculpture by the Mutoid Waste Company outside a pub close to Deptford DLR today, only also to find that they were at Glastonbury this year with some mega robotic toys. Yes they did quit UK many years ago and they must be as middle aged as me, but the original question is were they from or did the reside in Forest Hill?

See http://tash.gn.apc.org/gal_vehicles2.htm but this photographer has loads more and there is plenty on Google and myspace, even youtube and even e-bay.

Maybe Jamie could exhibit (seriously) at the YOHO. Hey I should be taking a commission here!
