I'm looking into the possibilty of starting a games evening in the
SE23 or nearby area and would like to find a suitable venue to do
so. It could be in a pub or community centre.

Ideally it would be near to a train station or on a good bus route. If
it's a pub then a private room would be necessary. The pub would have
decent food or allow the group to bring in takeaways.

If it is a community centre then they must be OK with consumption of
food and alcohol on the premises.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I'm not sure if we can make recommendations but there are probably a number of suitable venues.
I certainly think it is a good *QUESTION* if there is a pub with a large downstairs that could be used for such purposes.

Would the games include chess?

PS I think the pub in Question would welcome such an event especially if its on a quiet night.....

What games?

Re recommendation restrictions - if you post your email address Akhnaten people can email you specific recommendations off-site.

I know there's a pub not too far north of Stanstead Road that has a downstairs room a friend of mine had (hired?) for a party. It does decent food.

Good idea. I’d be happy to email a suggestion. Does it have to be in FH, or could it be in HONOR OAK?

If you could make a recommendation my e-mail is akhnaten@dsl.pipex.com

In terms of what games might be played we will not be playing Chess or Monopoly.

Games that might be a possibility are:
Settlers of Catan - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/13
Power Grid - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2651
Puerto Rico - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3076
Railroad Tycoon - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/17133
Age of Empires III - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/22545
Lifeboats - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/249
Carcassonne - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/822

...as well as some others

I'd be able to teach people to play these games. Honor Oak area is OK. I'd like the place to be easy to get to though. Transport links are important.

Sorry - forgot to answer one other question. We currently have six regulars. I have no idea how many would come if I advertised it - I think the existing group would need to check out potential venues. I'd probably advertise here, a notice in Sainsbury's, the library (mobile) and maybe Compedium games in Greenwich Market.

Ah takes me back to my dragons and dungeons and wargaming schooldays. That was 30+ years ago, but I still play things like Age of Empires (version 2) on my PC

There is a pub know to some as Ye Olde Honor Oake, actually not in Honor Oak (to fit in with Michael's requirements. They have cleaned-up on most events in the are, including jazz, comedy, and traditional pub games. They are also not slow in advertising their services (see their own dedicated thread). Alternatively you could try my local, the Moore Park Tavern, a cavernous place but very selective who they let in. Go to the butchers on Wood Vale and ask if you can't locate it.

Yes I did have a nice cyber-free holiday thank you for asking.

Actually if it were to be every week it would have to be Tuesday as comedy is coming back on Monday, wine tasting on Wednesday and jazz / acoustic nights on Thursdays!
