This is the link for the extension which is quite informative http://www.ellp.co.uk/

Looks like we might actaully have it by the end of the decade (fingers crossed anyway!!)

The rumour is that it will get an extra kick up the backside because it is included in the Olympics bid.

Thousands of normal commuters wanting it isn't enough. It needs a Tony project to get it done ;-)

Does any one know if the planned Tube line is as well as or instead of the current train services? I notice on http://www.ellp.co.uk/route_map.htm that the East London line does not take in London Bridge, so I am presuming / hoping we still get a train service to LB, I wouldn't fancy changing at New Cross as well as LB ...

Reading the info on the web site it would appear that the southern extension at least, will replace the existing train service.

The proposed tube services couldnt possibly replace the existing rail services for the simple reason that they are/would be going to different places. Trains which currently stop at Forest Hill come from and go to such diverse termini as Epsom, Guildford, Sutton, Victoria etc, whereas the proposed tubes will to only two locations. An increase of 4 trains per hour would seem to offer a service every six minutes or so, instead of the current 10 minutes.

Johnnyb7 is correct, except that 8 extra trains an hour are proposed, 4 to W Croydon, 4 to Crystal Palace. The new service is a TfL project, but the line will be run by Network Rail. How it will be badged up is still a question. It could be presented as part of Network Rail, or part of the Tube. The Tube has a stronger band identity than the surface railway in the South of London, but the service on parts of the Southern surface network (including Forest Hill) is already equal or better than some Tube services. On many lines, services are as frequent, and because the service has fewer stops, it is much faster than the underground (compare the Metropolitan line out to Uxbridge and Harrow with the Victoria to Croydon run for example). Maybe we should try to sell S London's relative strengths? Certainly with 14 trains an hour in each direction, the Forest Hill service will be superb.

Incidentally, Forest Hill station apparently has an awesome theoretical capacity of 18-20 trains per hour in each direction, and the Thameslink project is still being reworked.

Does anybody know if as part of the extensions/improvements to the line would the station see any renovations.
Some shelter near ends of the Platform where the train actually stops. On Platform 2 if you stay in the shelter whilst waiting you then have to run as fast as you can for the train as it stops right up the other end of the platform. Similar situation on platform 1 just not as far to run.?
This would spread the passengers (not customers)out along the platform more and help prevent a few carriages being as overcrowded.

I am meeting Council officers next week to discuss Forest Hill and other stations in Lewisham, and I will raise the point.

Whatever the relative merits of tube versus rail, the fact that the tube is warm and dry in winter is a definite plus!

Dear Cllr Whiting - I believe that as part of Lewisham's strategy for Forest Hill, the train station is under review for redevelopment. Given the cost of this and the inetiable lengthy timeframe, I propose an interim measure would be to build a more attractive station bridge nearer to WHSmith and demolish the existing monstrosity. Moving the whole station in line with the end of London Rd is already part of the agreed strategy, so this would be an excellent interim measure to facilitate more space for shelters and make the area more attractive to visitors and investors.
Also, I would propose that the graffiti that runs along the side of Station Kebabs, which is clearly visible from the FH station, is removed on a monthly basis.
Both measures would have an immediate positive impact on the area and in line with the Council's 'visible difference' policy.

Dear Rob

We need to improve the access across the tracks, but to get even interim progress such as the improvement you suggest, we will need to engage Network Rail, which is what we are now trying to do.

I will do a post after my meeting in the next 10 days to let you know how things look.
