First the feature in Wednesday's standard, today centre page of The Times' 'Bricks and Mortar' property section.

A very positive article, although we are "not perfect of course," being "too close to Catford" and "crime, as in any part of London, can be a problem".

The article rightly castigates Lewisham for being "slow to realise the area's possibilities, granting idiotic planning permissions...and allowing Perry Vale's shopping parade...to decay".

Unlike lazy journalism in past articles (The Independent a couple of years ago), they seem to have it spot on.

Stand by for an influx of the confused on Saturday, gawping in estate agents' windows.

Personally I find that this iniquitous Catfordism that is slipped in there should be nipped in the bud. I thought we were a politically correct crowd on here.

Before I moved to London and Forest Hill over 20 years ago I was ' warned' about Catford and Deptford as being dens of crime in iniquity. Imagine my shock when I found I was so close being in Forest Hill. ( no sense of geography at that time). Not the nicest of places but can't say my experience of either has ever been that bad, and frankly would rather live in either than in Camden Town where I work, where the day to day experience of crime and ( other people's ) drugs is much worse and includes random stabbings, people injecting in open air, street robberies, etc.

There are some nice parts to the north of Bromley Road with some character properties. And being considered undesirable means that people can actually afford to live in London. Dumps are perhaps underated. Camden is a dump too!

Hmmm. Boarded up shops, a soulless supermarket, a naff railway station, the odd estate filled with ugly thirties houses and an arterial road as a high street. Not like our own dear back yard then. Much, much better shopping though.

Some may have thought ''FH's moment had come'' when people in orange anti-nerve gas outfits arrived at a local pub late on Thursday evening........I bet the unfortunate drinkers in the Capitol did.

Toffeejim, perhaps you should move to Catford. Apparently it's nicer than Camden :)

And did any of you see the Forest Hill Book Club on BBC2's Culture Show last Saturday? Proof, indeed, that our moment has arrived.

No- I didn't see the show but also did not know there was still a Forest Hill Book Club! Any more information would be appreciated as very interested in taking part I attended one meeting of a book club ( may not be the same one) in the Dartmouth Arms over a year ago but could not find out about any further meetings/events so assumed it had all died a death...

Must be the best kept secret ever! Anyone fancy setting up an alternative book club/group?

Hi Roz, Nevermodern, everyone. Roz, I did email to invite you to our March meeting; perhaps it didn't get through?

We are still meeting, we did appear on the Culture Show, and Nevermodern is right, I'm afraid. Because of the limited space and of course so we can all hear each other, we do have a limit on size and have recently reached that. But we'd love a little competition from a rival (alternative) book group! And I can highly recommend the DA as a venue; they've been really good to us.
