Bus lanes on London road

I was wondering if anyone else found the bus lanes on the London Road between the Horniman museum and the Harvester to be poorly planned.

The worst is the one coming down the hill towards the lights near the Harvester. The timing of the lights is such that the forward lane becomes backed up right up to the Hornimans during peak hours. The left signal (for traffic continuing on the south circular) is green most of the time, however because of the bus lane you are forced to queue with the Lordship Lane traffic until you nearly reach the junction. Lots of motorist who I'm sure normally stay out of bus lanes are voting with their feet and driving straight through the bus lane. Isn't there a case for having it end sooner?

A similar situation occurs when coming back up the hill, though it is not as bad. I haven't been in the area all that long, and wonder if some of the road system has changed since they decided on the positioning of the bus lanes.

By the way, although I drive, I support bus lanes generally, I just feel that in some places the planners have not quite got the bus/car priority balance right.

I must admit I couldn't agree more. Like you I do support bus lanes in general, but sometimes common sense completely goes out the window. As you say it is stupid for traffic that can turn left on the south circular to queue with traffic that is going straight on. I also notice an increasing tendency for bus lanes to go right up to a junction which often results in other traffic getting trapped behind right turning cars.

Not long ago I received a ticket in Tooting because I drove along about 20 yards at the end of a bus lane in order to turn left, where my exit was totally clear. This was at 7.30 am and there was nothing in the bus lane - I was in and out in about 2 seconds. On the same day the government announced spending of many millions to help ease bottlenecks!! Crazy!!!

I agree with the earlier 2 comments.
I understand the bus lanes plus most of the other restictions in London are governed by a non elected body who call themselves Transport for London.Apparantly they mostly made up of former bus drivers.
I agree people who park in bus lanes should be heavily penalised , but just going in for a few yards when you are turning left , this is the law gone mad.

BEWARE! The camera on the way from FH down to the Harvester is now active and it costs £50 every time you get caught! I've got 2 tickets so far and half anticipating another...

Stay out if I were you - the time of day doesn't matter (well before 7am or after 7pm is OK) and the TFL people are on the same bonuses as traffic wardens - if they catch you and can prove it, there's no way on earth they'll let you off!

I have seen a similar case on the bus lane along the A205 past the Shell garage to the cross roads with Brockley Rise. A colleague was fined for using the lane before turning left on a clear road. Beware!

The design of some of the bus lanes defies logic. The one between Waldenshaw road and the traffic lights in London Road is an example. It originally had 20 min parking boxes which have been discontinued but are still active for Loading/Unloading but are generally used by people 'just popping into' Sainsbury's, Mcdonalds, etc. Also some people with Blue/Orange badges park outside Sainsbury's and are clearly not the people the badges are issued to and probably apply to a relative. Disabled badges ONLY apply if the person they are issued to is in the vehicle. They are not a Free Parking Pass.
Getting back to the Bus Lane , the 'hump' just outside the Abbey is positively dangerous. If you obey the bus lane you have to swing out to the right then back in again if you want to turn left, which of course most people don't do, they just cut across the last bit of the bus lane. How long before a Bus lane camera will be catching hundreds of motorists a day because of this. In conclusion this bus lane is a total waste of time. The only time it is clear for buses to use is around 4:30 in the afternoon occasionally, when the Red Route Patrol descends on it and books a few illegally parked vehicles before the mad scramble of drivers manage to escape.

Hello BT
One correction please Waldenshaw road and London road do not meet. Waldenshaw road stops at the railway bridge when it becomes Devonshire Road. The station and WH Smiths are in Devonshire road.
I do 100% agree with your comments though. I often wait at the bus stop by Mcdonalds at most people think it is OK to park there at any time. I have nether seen anyone booked

Sorry Brian but Waldenshaw Road is almost opposite Taymount Rise and goes down to meet Manor Mount. The road under the railway bridge is Waldram Crescent which then becomes Waldram Park.
