Yesterday (08/07/03)a pedestrian was knocked down on Manor Mount I assume by a car turning up manor mount from Waldenshaw Road at speed - I also think that the car did not stop.

This highlights the problem with this turning and the speed at which cars go via the cut through.

I live on Manor Mount and was shocked to see the ambulance police etc. Does anyone know what happened and if they caught the culprit? My partner had only just been telling me that he nearly witnessed another accident at the corner of Manor Mount and the road which cars from Sainsbury;s come whizzing out of - the car was an inch away from knocking a guy over and didn't even stop to apologise. The car was probably not the one involved in the accident mentioned above, as it went in the other direction, but it just goes to show how reckless cars are becoming on Manor Mount. I have to check the road several times before I cross it as cars just don't seem to care - they come spinning round from Waldenshaw on the way up to Honor Oak because they know it's one way. Something must be done before there's a fatality. And for all we know, the accident last night will be one.

Another very dangerous practice is the number of vehicles that turn into Manor Mount from Honor Oak against the One Way signs. I have met one on several occasions when travelling the correct way, and have just received loads of abuse when I have pointed out the error of their ways.

I think this is a serious issue now. Back in June I raised the problem of traffic on Manor Mount and Waldenshaw Road and this had a very high response from others who use this site. Now that an accident has happened I think it is time for something to be done about this.

I am going to try and contact the local council and see what they say. I think the comments from this forum will prove to them that as residents of Manor Mount we all have a concern about the traffic.

Ok,

I have phoned the Coucil and spoke to various different people on this matter. I have been asked to write a letter containing relevant details about specific issues we have.

Can I ask people to post up on this forum points they would like to be raised and I will include them in the letter that I write.

Thanks

I've also been abused by car drivers going through the no entry sign at the junction of Manor Mount and Honor Oak Road.
I asked a policeman I know what I as a citizen could do and was told nothing!
Doesn't matter if I note the type of car, car number plate, description of occupants, time of day, etc. etc.
There appears to be nothing that we as individuals can do we're dependant on police/traffic wardens/local councillors
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sunday 27th July 1815hrs
Waiting in the queue in Honor Oak Rd, The car in front of me suddenly turned into Manor Mount and drove down there at speed. Could it be the Hit & Run was a car travelling the WRONG way!!

How about we post the Date, Time and Registration Nos. of offenders that we see. I'm not sure how we stand legally but its worth thinking about.

I wouldn't mind but yesterday the 30th I was walking home from the railway station at 12 noon. A BMW came the wrong way up Davids Road. There were @ 10 police officers in Manor Mount. The police did not stop this driver instead they helped the two young men in the car with directions. What hope have we when this happens.

I suppose my next question is what were all of these police officers doing yesterday afternoon?

I would also like to raise my concern as a pedestrain and car driver. I have nearly been hit by cars travelling at high speed the wrong way down Manor Mount, as I attempt to cross from Waldenshaw into the Fieldings in my car. I agree somenthing needs to be done before there is a fatality! I have also noticed that there has been an increase in drivers driving the wrong way up Davids road, I have met one head on!

Can we start a petition? Can we all write to the council? Could we take digital photos and load them on this website?

I am not surprised by the last comment. Davids Road is a terrible short cut. I reckon less than 1% of cars have business in the road.
I cannot understand the reluctance of the police to penalise the offending driver.
On another note it was great in Devonshire Road for the few days the junction with the A 205 was closed. You could hear the birds rather than engines and rap music.
Could we not ask the council to close for good.?

4 wheel drive, Wednesday - turns into Manor Mount from HOR and nearly hits car attempting to leave the road the right way. Woman winds down the window to tell him its no entry and gets a load of foul-mouthed abuse. Reg was D1 TC

I have personal experience of enforcing the no entry at Manor Mount - I am a serving police officer (working and living locally) - last time I worked in Manor Mount one of the persons reported for driving through the no entry signs was a resident from that very road! He was most aggrieved so please let us have a consensus of opinion about what you want from police regarding the contravention of the signs and please don't do it yourselves!!!
PS The same thing happened in Hunsdon Road,New Cross - I am not singling out the residents in Manor Mount !

The concenus is stop them turning down manor Mount from HOR. I used to live along HOR and had to cross Manor Mount. On several occasions I only just made it to the other side of the road before a car or van swung into Manor Mount. Now I live in the Fieldings and cross Mount Mount from Waldenshaw or further down by Sainsburys this can be a nightmare. PC K if you see another moanie resident who is breaking the law and is liable to run me or another resident/pedestrian /child over please do something about it.

Couldn't we have a one way ramp in the road to prevent cars going down Manor Mount the wrong like they have in some car parks?

I symphasize with the residents of Manor Road but would also like to suggest there is a good case for closing of the Forest Hill end of Devonshire Rd . It was done recently for gas work and it was sheer bliss

It might have been sheer bliss for you, Brian, but the traffic on Honor Oak Road was much worse than normal - constant queues (& accompanying blaring music) and extra people going the wrong way down Manor Mount.
I'd like to suggest closing the end of Honor Oak Road that joins the South Circular!

For Sam - he got as ticket! I used to live in Honor Oak Road and it is a wonderful place to live spoiled only by the terrible traffic. I sympathise with motorists (though I don't have a car or have any intention of getting one) but I really think that people in cars need to remember and respect pedestrians rights. I don't have any ground breaking ideas on how to solve the problem nevertheless I do think residents can influence decisions about traffic routes but it can be a slow and laborious job to get things done. Are there any times during the day when the problem is worse?

Long message - my first! - please read and see the note at the end about how your attendance at next Forest Hill Steering Group meeting might make a difference!

I live in Ewelme Road- I heard about the Manor Mount incident in the FH News. I don't know the person, but I hope that they are recovering from the ordeal.
I understood that the individual in question was trying to remonstrate with the drivers for
a) coming the wrong way down a one way street
b) doing a) at speed.
and hence not hit by the car, but knocked unconscious by its two occupants after a physical attack. This is as reported in the FH Community News.

We all I think know that cars frequently go the wrong way down Manor Mount and Davids Road. The report in FHC News suggested that this problem was under discussion between Jim Dowd MP and Steve Bullock ( Mayor and local resident)

My partner was physically attacked a year or so ago in Honor Oak Road by a speeding motorist,in broad daylight, who, having seen him wave a fist at him in his rear view mirror, reversed the wrong way back down the road at speed , got out,and physically attacked him. Luckily he came to no harm, but that was indeed luck. The person in Manor Mount was clearly not so lucky.

Ewelme Road is one of the roads leading from Honor Oak Road to Devonshire. Recently and since the road surface was renewed, our road has been increasingly used as a rat run to the South Circular- high numbers of traffic at a fair speed. I and my neighbours are concerned about our safety and the effect of such increased noise on our lives. We have observed HGV's using this road as a short cut, it being very handy indeed to belt down Ewelme, turn right into Woodcombe Crescent, and into Devonshire Road.

I have written to Susan Wise, our local Councillor, and although I received a fair response, there was no real attempt to put this issue on any serious agenda that will lead to action. Clearly after the Manor Mount incident, this Council must surely now put appropriate traffic management and reduction measures on the agenda. The experiences of people on this website also illustrate that these incidents are not just one offs.

As an attendee at the Steering Group, I have asked for traffic management matters to be brought up at the next meeting on 11th December. If you feel strongly as I do about maintaining quality of life in this area, and want to make a case for traffic calming/ traffic reduction measures in our residential streets, then I urge you to attend. Contact Alice Lindo at Lewisham Council for info.

If anyone wishes to form a proper campaign group or discuss this further then please let me know via this page -alternately contact me on serendipity19@fsmail.net.

Thank you.

Yes a very good idea to get this to be added to the Agenda in December. I don't see any feedback on the site from the promised discussion between Steve Bullock and Jim Dowd.

If you, Sue, and anyone else feel strongly, can I suggest that you contact Alice Lindo at Lewisham Council, and request that this is definitely put on the agenda for the meeting on December 11th. There is someone attending already from traffic management, but I think this may just be about parking. The more pressure the better.

Please note, the subject of ratrunning and local traffic problems such as this are now firmly on the agenda for the next steering group meeting on 11th December, its at Holy Trinity, Sydenham Park, 7 pm ish. Hopefully everyone who has an interest in getting something done will come along to air their views. There are a few high level people from the Council attending so its a great chance to lobby!
