Have just found out about this via the Sydenham forum. There's a Streetcar (ie a car you can hire on an hourly basis) based in the Perry Vale carpark. I don't know how long it's been there - has anyone seen any publicity about it?

A good idea... I like the way they have a picture of it.

But as what looks like a Peugeot 106 it's hardly Named Desire, is it?

Sorry

But someone has to supply bad jokes when BD isn't

I spotted it on the way to collect a parcel at the Post Office. It was a Golf that was parked there when I saw it.

I have seen publicity about it but had not realised there was one specifically here. I think I even saw a review on Top Gear or some other TV programme some time ago which was quite positive.

As I understand it, all the Streetcar cars are all nice new VW Golfs. They have lots of locations across central London now.

For those who don't want the hassle and expense of running their own car it's a really good alternative for short trips like supermarket/IKEA runs - I used to use a similar service.

The only downsides are when the car has already been booked or if you live too far from the parking space.

I would have thought for super market visits etc taxis would be much cheaper than hire car.
For IKEA my best tip is stay away.

For regular supermarket shopping trips, taxis probably are cheaper - or just buying it online. Their delivery charge is often the same or less than a taxi might be.

But, if you were planning on picking up a larger item locally or anything bulky, then it's not a bad deal. £4.95 an hour is a heck of a lot cheaper than a cab.

Thanks for pointing out that there's one nearby - and there's another in Overhill Road too - I may join since I've never been able to justify the cost of buying/running a car but would like the occasional convenience.

Another Streetcar has been added - at the top of Honor Oak Park. As has been said before, it's perhaps a niche market - but may be of interest to some readers.

It's on Hengrave Road: http://www.multimap.com/clients/browse.cgi?client= mycar&lon=-0.051030&lat=51.448730&scale=10000&widt h=500&height=300&rt=browse2&reclimit=1

Used it today, it is actually quite a convenient and user-friendly service. There is a £150 deposit to sign up though which is not too prominently mentioned on any of the marketing literature.
