The other day I was walking down Dunoon Road when I noticed a flag sticking out of a dog poo on the pavement. It had a picture of George Bush on it.
Has anyone noticed any more of these? Not sure if it was a one off or part of a concerted campaign against the war in Iraq (or selfish dog owners?)

Can't think of anywhere better to put a picture of George Dubya! Someone must carry these flags around around looking for opportunistic 'parcels'.
If its a campaign against the war in Iraq its not exactly high profile.
Disappointed to know that dog owners aren't doing the necessary and to be honest , I find that more disturbing.

I agree with you Roz. Dubya's smug face sticking out of the poo was funny, but the real issue is the plentiful supply of these mounds suitable for flags. I walk around Devonshire Road and its various side roads with my small children and it is often a bit like an obstacle course trying to avoid the parcels. "Flagging" them up seems a great idea.

Weirdly, someone had put a frame around a dog poo on the pavement on Devonshire Road with the title; "But is it art?". Made me and the Good Lady Wife laugh very hard. I like to think that it's a comment on the copious amounts of dog poo that seem to stack up on Devonshire Road rather than a subversive political message. Can anything be done about this local problem? The signs don't seem to deter.

Clearly someone is trying to raise the profile of this issue. Well done whoever you are. Hopefully these amusing signs will make the inconsiderate dog owners reflect on what they are doing and how unpleasant it is. As Deanos points out, the official signs are ignored. I guess it must be a difficult area to apply the law. Maybe the solution is to make it socially unacceptable and this could be a good start.

It might be more effective to use this link

to get the pavement cleaned.

I just couldn't help myself ...

I Googled 'dog poo flag' and found a few articles about George Bush flags appearing in Germany in 2005, plus a couple of sites where you can download DIY flags and then send in photos of the planted flags:

http://www.madeyouthink.org/

http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/prod/dialspace/town/p ipexdsl/o/aour74/poo-flags/index.htm

Weird or what.

"Report an Issue" everytime you see a dog turd?
The reality is there would be countless reports every day. I'd like to see Lewisham Council cope with that! Most dog turds get removed eventually by a combination of weathering and helpful pedestrians taking bits away on the soles of their shoes. I don't think the issue is cleaning the pavements (that is done quite well already), I think it is about creating a climate whereby it is unacceptable to leave the little critters there in the first place.

Nice bit of research Blushingsnail. I notice the "madeyouthink" website is about art, whereas the "poo flags campaign" is anti American foreign policy. I wonder what the motive is for the Forest Hill flagger ? So far we have had one case each of the political and the art statements.
I had assumed it was about the horrible habit of leaving doggy doo doo on the pavement (a "pet" subject of mine in case you hadn't noticed).

This is the main reason I have a cat instead of a dog - they are discreet and discerning animals with a sense of propriety, burying their business without any to do- doo doo doo doo.

Is this on the increase? Perhaps we should prepare a map of reported sightings in the area. To go to the extreme, we could extract DNA from a random sample and try and determine the sex, age, and breed of dog in each case and then put up some posters as a deterrant.

There is a reasonable amount of general weirdness around Forest Hill (and not just the shoppers in Sainsbury).

Have a look at some of the messages on the boarded-up Blue Mountain Coffee Shop and some strange graffiti on the help point at the top of the underpass.

The Forest Hill Flagger has struck again.
Spotted in Dunoon Road this afternoon - a doggy plop plop completely surrounded by shaving foam with the message on the flag saying "Sweeny Turd". Fantastic.

Unfortunately I am still in the era of the 35mm film camera. By the time I get a photo sorted the incident will have run out of steam.

This made me laugh, because yesterday I was actually out taking photos of dog poo. I am fed up of all the mess that the dogs in my street have left outside my house and decided to report it to the Council, and was directed to the 'Love Lewisham' website which asked for a photograph of the problem I was reporting. So I duly emailed a photo of the poo to them. It worked, because within a few hours a team from the Council had arrived and swept the pavement clean. You can even see the photo on the Love Lewisham website.... So it is worth reporting these things sometimes.

I saw a woman in my street yesterday bundle a large dog into the back of a car and drive off. She did not look familiar at all and I know most of my neighbours. Just feet away from the car there was a fresh steaming mess. If I see her/the car/mutt again I will take a photo of the car with my mobile phone.I am sure that this dog may be to blame for some of this. There is a lot of it around at the moment and I've never seen it so bad. I really want to give these people a hard time for leaving their problems on our doorstep- I bet they do not leave mess in their own street. Any scope for naming and shaming offenders on this website?

Roz,

When you say "I am sure that this dog may be to blame for some of this", do you mean that you think the woman might have had a dump on the pavement, too?

The SLP also refers to the framed poo...unfortunately the paper doesn't put the stories on the internet....but it may find its way into the Standard or a national paper.

I've made the press twice this week - pictured on the allotment with the kids in Time Out and now being quoted about dog poo. Phew.

This story has now reached page 3 of the South London Press under the headline "Poodunnit?"

It seems someone has collected various photographs of the street artwort onto a CD and posted it (anonymously) to the SLP with the message "some turd decorations that SE23 forum may have missed".
They have printed 4 photographs of signs that have not been noted here. They are also very keen to track down who the "mystery doggy-do flagger" is.

Not sure that decorated dog mess is something the area wants to be known for, though.

This weeks highlights from Dunoon Road.
At the top of the hill the beautifully presented "Shitake Mushrooms or Turdstools?"
At the bottom of the hill we have the two week old Sweeny Turd (a bit weathered and the shaving foam is long gone) recycled into "Blurred Turd".
A great example of art reinventing itself.

This weeks news from Poo Corner.

'Turd artist' strikes again ...South London Press

It appears that the Forest Hill Flagger has struck again and is "taunting" the SLP. A second CD of images has been posted to the paper by the anonymous artist.
The SLP has again tastefully reproduced a couple of photos (offending matter has been omitted).
The slogans are "One scoop or two?" and "Bird turd!" (attached to a fluffy yellow and pink bird).

There is always the Lewisham Council art installation- a yellow stamped dog in action. It will be around for some time, until they next dog sorry dig up the pavement. I might just put a frame around the one in our road.

The poo-flagger is back! Devonshire Road's brown pavement furniture was adorned with frames again this morning, and some silly string which gave it a festive air.

Who is this mysterious poo-decorator?!...

I've noticed that in the Dunoon Road / Devonshire Road area there is less mess since the flagger started their great quest. It's not a scientific observation but I reckon the flagger has had an effect.
Maybe the way forward is mass flagging so that not a turd remains unconquered in SE23. A larger scale production of flags could lead to more exciting possibilities.
Any more ideas?
