Off-peak returns have only been abolished for National Rail journeys within London Zones 1-6. You can still buy an off-peak return if you use a station outside of the London zones travelling in.

That's my understanding from the Southern Railways link on Using Oyster Cards.

It has a useful FAQ pdf with the following question...

Q: Why are you not selling Off Peak Day Returns anymore?
When Oyster is introduced on National Rail services, Off-Peak Day Return tickets will no longer be available in the London zonal area, across all train operators. This is primarily because, under Oyster pay as you go, fares are calculated based on each single journey made rather than a return journey. Different fares are also applied depending on the time of day and zone passengers are travelling from and to.


My concern is that maybe one day TfL will want to abolish ALL weekly, monthly and annual season tickets within zones 1-6 and force regular commuters to use PAYG!
