They could put spikes on their side of the fence.
Surely no one cares if and when criminals hurt themselves.

Bensonby, good point. Why not just give them the keys and make them a cuppa
Sounds like you haven't had anyone break into your garden.

Or stick a pond in the garden, if they want to go wandering about in the dark they'll end up in it.

If
'the slightest pressure'
on the trip wire will fire the blank (see the link above) then there could be a lot of disturbance from inquisitive foxes! Seems like a slightly less sensitive trip wire is required. Does seem like a useful deterrent though because it would alert all in the area to the presence of intruders and probably not be as widely ignored as domestic burglar alarms.

Deano, I didn't comment on what i thought of the legal situation. I Merely pointed it out to highligh the possible legal consequences of installing certain types
of "deterrent".

Am I right in understanding that your link to the Offences against the Person Act implies that it is permissible to set a 'spring gun, man trap, or other engine calculated to destroy human life or inflict grievous bodily harm' to protect a dwelling house so long as this is only done between sunset and sunrise?
Surprising if true, but a possible business opportunity here! Modern technology should make it possible to enable and disable the equipment at the appropriate hours automatically.

Was also advised that if it was a kid that burgled us chances are nothing will happen to them.
So kids can break the law at will.
What has happened to Borstals

that's what it sounds like to me! One of the women told us that one of the offenders has been caught and let out/off so many times and he just keeps doing it. I was hoping the police will make a dna match but now I've been told that if it's a kid nothing will happen and if it's an adult we will only find out who it is IF it goes to court! I'm disgusted that the victim can't have any information but the criminal is protected!

There are far too many incidents for comfort. About time the authorities did something.

Brian - what do you think the authorities can do aside from what they already do????
the police investigate and if they get evidence the burglar will be prosecuted and if convicted sentenced. I think sentences could be longer - but it is up to the government to set sentencing guidelines. They certainly need to build more prisons - and the issue of education and unemployment play a part. Some people are of course just plain bad and will commit crime regardless......

Those caught should get LONG prison visits with hard labour ( no I do not mean Milliband Jnr )
I understand it is not even automatic that they get put away . Unbelievable.

Think I will have to agree with you on that one Brian, however I was only at junior school in the 60s, in what I would say were the best/carefree days of my life, dont care what anyone says about rose tinted glasses, I firmly believe the the 60os were a magical time, the 70,s were superb also, apologies to all, for going off topic, and before I get pikced up on it, apologies for any spelling mistakes of poorly written English, its all them drugs in the 60s when I should have been studying - LOL
