I went to Sydenham but only for the last year and a half of my schooldays- Our Ladys Convent (Crystal Palace) was closing down and I couldn't be guaranteed exam entries apparently.
My son got his place at Forest Hill Boys confirmed today and we are all delighted- Mr Walsh sold the school very well when we visited and we are looking forward to September.

I did. Adamsrill (Mr DeSouza is the teacher i remember). Mr Garrard was the Head Master.
Then FHB. Shackleton House.
It used to have an outdoor swimming pool back then (mid 70's). Unheated of course.....man, that was a cold place!

Re Outdoor Swimming Pool. Glad somebode had use of it. I was there in 60's and every fundraising event we had was for this outside pool. I believe it did not last that long. Seemed a waste of money .
Did you still have those antique magoos buses to take you to sports at Sidcup.

it was those blue council buses for a while (I coudnt possibly repeat now the names we had for them then - extremely un-pc), then it changed to normal coaches...must have cost a fortune in coach hire.
I wasn't a big fan of Games, so used to pray for a traffic jam in Catford!

I was at Forest Hill Comprehensive as it was known in 1959. The school was built for 1200 boys and there were 2000 when I went. The place was full and very unruly. There was constant fund raising for this swimming pool that one day we would all enjoy and by the time I left in 1964 the thing had still not been built. What I did like about the place was the library with it's geometric shape spanning north block and south block.
In Dacres Road opposite the school was this nutty woman who used to shout at the school during the day, "You persecutors!" she would scream and she could be heard in all the lessons. She obviously objected to the school being there in place of the beautiful villas of the Victorian era. One of our teachers, Mr Boon shouted at her to shut up from the classroom window, "Your just like Colonel Nasser!" she wheezed. Boon replied, "Madam, I am Colonel Nasser!"
I took my tennis racket to every summer games lesson to enjoy a game on the hardcourts. I never got one game while at the school. I ended up joining the Forest Hill Lawn Tennis and Bowling Club to play the sport I loved. There were just too many kids and not enough space. I hated the place and rejoiced the day I left.

I had a statement of special needs at primary age, so went to Brent Knoll School on Mayow Road until I was 11, then moved to East Sussex during my secondary school years.
My Mother went to Sydenham School which was called Sydenham County Girls School in Dartmouth Road in the 60s.

Keep this up I'm really interested,as I lived in F. Hill from around 1957 until 1974 everything in this timespan is interesting to me. Lived in Noel Terrace ,Clyde Terrace similar dates would be interested in anything around those dates.Forest Hill was so different in those days.

I joined in 1960 , one year after you. In Drake House.
Yes remember well the lady who used to shout to keep her house. Very sad. Seem to remember Mr Ashby felt sorry for her.
Would it not be nice if the old houses were still there rather than the tower blocks.

St Michael's infants Sydenham, the Forest Hill Boys from 1967- 1971. Harvey house under Mr Dawes (housemaster). The school was a war zone when I was there, that's why I left early.

Yeh I remember going to Eltham for games afternoon on one of the six or seven coaches. One of the boys on our coach was reading a mucky mag. At Catford traffic lights one of the other coaches pulled up alongside. The teacher on the other bus, a certain Mr Fone! observed the boy with the dirty mag. When we got to Eltham Fone was waiting for our coach and climbed aboard as soon as we stopped. "Where's the magazine?" he asked. The boy in question said, "I don't know Sir!".
"Then I'll cane you, and the boy who now has the magazine!" The mucky mag miraculously appeared in the seat well up the middle of the coach. Fone took the mag and later slippered the boy on the halfway line of the football pitch. The funny thing was- Fone kept the magazine!

I well remember Mr Nagy who was a Hungarian. On our house trip to Belgium in 1963 one of the boys a Peter Dunnicliffe got into difficulties while swimming in the River Meusse. All us kids had to stay out of the water while Nagy made several dives into the river but was unable to find the boy. Jock Heneyman our housemaster left the next day to do the dirty work and infom the poor lad's parents about his demise. Nagy was bloody brilliant and deserved a medal for his attempts to say the poor s*d.

I went to St Bart's C of E Primary School in Kirkdale from about 1955 to 1961 then to Forest Hill Secondary School from 1961 to 1966. I was in Shackleton, Dave Stanbury was housemaster. Mr Edwards was headmaster then Mr Potter. Mr Ashbee ('Count Creep' ) taught history, he died in 2009, one of the most respected archaeologists of early-Britain, also a leading light in the 'Just William' society! Sports in Eltham just seemed to be about mud, and a friend suggested taking up sailing - mainly because we went with the girls from Sydenham County! Sound plan. 'Yogi' Behrens was sailing master but was succeeded by Terry 'Barb' Dwyer - ex-Blue Funnel Line officer. Mr Blanchard ('Wig') taught maths, and Boone ('Daniel') also taught maths and was devastatingly accurate with chalk or board eraser whilst facing the blackboard - he had a black-faced watch so he could use it as a mirror and see behind him!
I lived in Newlands Park in Sydenham 'til about 1963 then in Woolstone Road, Forest Hill. I always thought Forest Hill School balanced anarchy with tyranny quite well - I enjoyed my time there, never really worked very hard but developed a life-long interest in history and got a pretty good grounding in science.
Later in the early-70s I lived in London Road in the Dorbro Estates flats either side of Taymount Rise. Used the Bird-in-Hand when Jack & Gladys Taylor had it, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band played there in the 60s.

Elliot Bank Primary School 1990-1994
Crofton 1994-1999
Elliot Bank was by far the best school I know. The staff were amazing. I switched to there from Fairlawn as I was having problems with a teacher there, so I was pulled out by my parents.
Crofton... well that was just an eye opener from day 1.

Interesting ...I attended FHS from 1959 and don't recall a Peter Walsh...perhaps at my advanced age the memory is failing !
Mr Howard was headmaster when I joined and within two years or so Mr Potter took over.
Excellent Music dep't in my early years ...A E Kemp,Mr Collins ..very good school choir which certain masters also took part in (Mr Simmons, woodwork teacher,Mr Stanbury and others)
The School Orchestra was also pretty good and when the two came together at concerts in the School hall with the domed roof the results were often very good indeed,
When the School was situated in Brockley it was particularly well known for its Music dep't ..I think a certain Mr Sampson was running it in those days.Mr Harvey, appropriately enough, was also involved
Does anyone know why they have demolished the library which once stood proudly and formidably at the front of the school. This particular section was a significant feature
I have good memories of this school..particularly in my early years there

I went to Crofton Park secondary school from 1961-1965. It was a mixed school to begin with, then changed to boys only school.
The annexe for first years, was in Stillness Road, next to Stillness road school.
The Headmaster was Mr Millington. I lived in Ackroyd Road then.

I was in Shackleton from 66 ish. Still in contact with some mates and Peter Haswell, ex house master, who married a Polish lady and retired, lives in Berlin.
I live abroad since 1983. Mum is still in the area, though, hence my interest in the area.
