A hoard of assorted rodents, birds and other wildlife would appear out of nowhere and thank you for a free lunch?

A Community Support Officer would appear from nowhere and issue a penalty ticket for littering?

Sorry Andrewr, how irresponsible of me for mentioning such a thing!!!
Whilst i'm here, work on the whole station looks like it's come to a complete halt. Don't know why they don't just get it all sorted and be done with it. I have seen the diggers at the end but my great uncle Albert and his mate Alfred could have finished the job quicker with the bucket and spade they bought me once on a day trip down to Margate sometime in the 1950's!!!!
Pah, all seems a bit half hearted to me.

I saw the diggers there on Wednesday. There was no activity and nobody was there.
I remember the days when you used to see workmen leaning on their shovels!

They're not going to work with plant in close proximity to the track while trains are running and current is on. This will be night time work.
You can see the progress, there are many one ton bags of spoil waiting for removal. No doubt an engineers train with crane will be booked on nights to cart it all away and deliver materials.

I measured some platform-train step up heights at Honor Oak Park today. Worst was a step up of 380mm (15") at the footbridge end of Platform 1 onto a Southern train. The smallest step up was 180mm.
The accessible tube map classifies a step of more than 121mm as falling into their worst accessibility class, and does not recognise a step of more than 323mm as existing! It seems that any platform to train step of more than 250mm needs a special dispensation from the Railway Inspectorate.
The trains at Honor Oak Park are not accessible for many people who can manage the steps. Pressure on Network Rail to address this problem seems justified. Does anyone have any particular access problems to report?

Indeed last year with the ice last year was particularily treacherous, especially getting off the train and thats for someone fully able bodied and relatively young ,well middle aged!.It makes my parents who are in their seventies visiting an impossibilty really. I did ask when the station was being upgraded was there any chance of the platform being raised.

I always get hold of the rail in the carriage before I climb up into the train.
Surely the platform could be raised afew inches.

Have found a DfT report on research into platform - train steps which makes interesting reading if you have plenty of time. I've not read it all but one key finding is that people find it more difficult to step down than up - where grab handles are less help.
I suspect raising platforms 'a few inches' is technically quite a challenge and will only be done with a lot of pressure. In fact, at HOP, some of the platform needs to be raised the best part of a foot. I do wonder whetehr there is any precedent for just putting a ramp back perhaps four feet from the edge of the platform, so only the edge is raised, not the whole platform. Has anyone seen this done anywhere?
I know some tube platforms have raised sections on just part of the platform, but I think this is easier because the doors are always in the same place so there is no risk of stepping down onto a ramp which I think would be unacceptable.
This is the link to the DfT report: here for anyone who wants to read it.

That's an interesting idea, about ski-sloping the edge of the platform nearest the train upwards to make an easier train exit/entrance for people.
Would it bring up issues of skidding in slippery conditions when people exit the train though?
