We are lucky that such incidents are very rare, even in South East London. Sadly deaths on the roads kill many more people than assaults. Figures from ONS for 2014 show that across all of England and Wales the numbers of people assaulted and killed between ages of 15-34 years old was 110. This compares to almost 1000 classified as 'intentional self-harm', 631 involving transport, 1300 involving accidental poisoning.
Young adults are 10 ten times more likely to kill themselves than be killed by somebody else.
Other stats from 2013 show that "UK murder rate has fallen by half since 2003" (and probably continues to fall).
There is no doubt that Inner South East London has more than it's fair share of violence and murders, and although they make the headlines, they are very rare events.
My sympathies are with the victims in this case and their family and friends. I don't want to belittle the suffering caused by any violent death.
