I think a fine line has to be drawn somewhere in the matter of what the expectation in an ideal world is.
Total eradication of foxes because they are annoying and "dirty" so to speak is unreasonable. They have been around for a long time, and are a part of the ecosystem in the area. As has been pointed out.
However, encouraging them to come closer to humans, feeding them, and inviting them into spaces they would usually avoid, is more than reasonable. Especially when the interaction involves littering or non edible objects.
The same argument could be made about cats too on many levels, but lets hope it doesn't go that way or my dogs will be working overtime!
On a side note, I find the noises and actions of foxes quite amusing. Strange but true.

Great reasoned post snazy - I fully agree other than the actual fox noises which are bizarre!

A return to an annual cull to keep the numbers down has always seemed best to me. As has been noted when a Fox is 'removed' others move into the space so after a few years of regular culling there would be fewer foxes with larger territories (as was the case in the past) and they might even return to being the shy mostly nocturnal animal they should be.
Discussing this at work last week one suggestion was that we are currently embarked on a slow path to domesticicating foxes as happened with dogs - very amusing I thought.

Come on folk. Leave the foxes alone.
I agree that people should not feed them as this will make them more trusting of humans and encourages them to over breed. If left alone their population will find its own natural level.
Foxes are a valid part of the eco system and help keep down the rat population as well as feeding on already dead animals.
Yes, they do make a mess when they scatter the content of discarded plastic sacks and the remains of take away meals that litter our streets, but that is caused by thoughtless humans that do not dispose of their waste responsibly.
Foxes have as much right to live on this planet as us humans and probably more in some cases.

Thanks OakR proof that I am indeed from time to time reasonable.
Regarding the noises made, I was quite alarmed with a fully adult co-worker who told me the noises were made when the foxes fornicate lol
The noises are indeed bizarre, but it's the weird and wonderful animal kingdom we are talking about here. Fantastic stuff.

Foxes mainly scream when they are fighting/play-fighting (called "gekkering"). Fighting is usually mainly through sound, not actual physical encounters. Mating only takes place in January so that's when you hear that kind of screaming.

I like to see them. Also like squirrels. They remind me of home.

Appletree, I love watching them in the streets having their exchanges, great to see nature doing its thing. Laying close to the ground, screeching away, seemingly unbothered by the large dog closing in, as they are far too busy with their exchange.
Love watching a squirrel too, but have to admit there are a growing number recently, especially around Valentine Court.
Great solution for all is just leave each other alone, i.e don't feed or encourage them, works for me.

wow - nice people! i guess nothing you can do if it's on their property but dumping dog food on a public pavement is pretty anti-social at the best of times - love thy neighbour!

With St. Theresa considering a return of fox hunting the problem could well be solved with the formation of a FH hunt. Tally Ho!

Oi oi, as an occasional Guardian reader myself, being needlessly and hypothetically implicated into this situation for no reason makes me want to go out and feed a shed-load of foxes. See what You've done?

Joe90's not wrong. It was light-heartedly taking umbrage at bringing newspaper readership into the situation. (and I AM a lovely person, as you rightly presumed).

See first few comments (page 1). Didn't mean to divert the conversation too much though. Carry on with the foxes.

I dont expect it is light hearted for the owners of the damaged vehicles though. But still, you carry on.
