I'm looking forward to the ELL opening as it will give us more options getting about London (although most routes are more convoluted than our existing LB/ChX service - they really missed a trick by not linking it to the Central Line).
I know it's a long way off, but the real benefit will come with Crossrail, where the ELL interchange at Whitechapel will take you straight across to Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street, or straight across to Paddington and Heathrow.

Do you think Crossrail will go ahead?

But it might end up like the first attempts at the Chunnel - a big hole with nowhere to go due to lack of funds.

I suspect Crossrail will be completed whoever is in power as it'd be too politically sensitive for them to not spend the money on the project.

There is a big barge in the middle of the Thames on the Tower Bridge side of London brige testing the bottom, to ensure that its safe for the crossrail tunnel to pass nearby without leaking..

Surely the tunnel would be made of waterproof concrete?

Surely Heathrow will be closed by then and we'll all be taking off from Boris Island in the Thames Estuary?

There was a front page article in LAST week's Observer discussing how the project was being looked at to see where it could be scaled back (as far as I recall).

According to the Guardian, they were looking at cost savings to keeep the projects within budget, rather than cutting the budget.
Cuts were being looked at on both Thameslink and Crossrail, including ?200M savings on London Bridge's redevelopment, reducing Thameslink from 24tph to 20tph, buying fewer carriages and ?150M savings if they didn't install the automatic train operating technology.

Yes. No mention of cutting the number of stations, which is the key point for connections with the ELL.

Call me cynical but I suspect that when Call Me Dave gets the keys to No10, Crossrail will be shelved at best, or more probably cancelled. Look at BB's tenure of City Hall so far and its cuts, cuts, cuts all the way, even in the cycling budget. Also, Tory transport policy has always been to cut rail investment and run down public transport, cutting it and raising fares and there is no reason to believe that they would be any different in the future.

Unfortunately it looks like Crossrail and (more importantly for Forest Hill) Thameslink are under significant financial pressure.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/...s-cutbacks
If Thameslink does have cuts to the number of proposed services it will almost certainly be bad news for Forest Hill commuters as we will lose platforms at London Bridge lower level station and we will not get additional services on the Thameslink through to Blackfiars and Kings Cross, these will be taken up by the more profitable Thameslink/First Capital Connect services linking Gatwick to St Pancras International.
I hope that the potential cuts to Thameslink will be opposed by all local civic organisations and politicians.
