Certainly having lived and worked in Forest Hill for over 10 years, the quality of any of the above has been very mixed at best.

For example music venues aren't exactly thick on the ground and certainly for my tastes only the occasional act takes place in Forest Hill.

As for decent places to go for a drink, maybe it will come in time. Who knows where all the vast number of office-based people who get off the train go? Probably they buy a bottle of wine and invite people round or go out straight after work in the City. It would be nice if they poured into somewhere local but self-evidently they don't. Maybe a big brasserie/wine bar would go broke - I don't know the answer.

Anyway, good luck with the site.

I think the more people use the restaurants, shops etc around Forest Hill, the more it will attract further investment.

Shame that coffee shop near the station closed down a year or so ago.
And where do all the office workers go when they get off the train??? It's a total mystery - they just disappear.

I can not agree more with all of you, a few more relxaed and sligthly more (dare I say it) trendy bars/coffe houses would do magic for the area, or even a nice pub would make the area better. Have anyone seen the new Italian restaurant coming up ....Finally more choice!!!

With response to Mikkel, don't we have enough pubs in SE23?

Me again.
Why is there nothing about live music at Horniman Museum on this site under EVENTS? They've been trumpeting their Music Room in various publications yet little of it seems to be aimed locally. To my certain knowledge there have been 2 free acoustic events over the last month, most recently a North African guy playing rai (the most popular type of north african 'pop' music)
Come on Horniman, yours could be a fantastic venue and less problems with disturbing the neighbours if it were indoors.
Not in Horniman or SE23 there are other really good World Music artists coming up:
March 13 Maurice el Medioni :Kemia Bar W1
March 22 Erkan Ogur :Purcell Rooms South Bank
March 23 Wendo Kollosoy&Kanda Bongo Man:
Ronnie Scotts W1
March 28 Madredeus : Royal Festival Hall SE1

Does anyone know what the new shop next to Forest Hill station (formally Cafe Mambo) is going to be?

I work in the City and there are tons of wine bars. And I used to live in Islington with tons of trendy wine bars.

They're horrible! They're packed, and you're treated like a customer rather than a person.

Crystal Palace is nearby with some excellent pubs, bars and restaurants and the Indian on Dartmouth Road is really excellent (despite someone complaning about price increases, you will find it's rather cheaper than Islington...).

Hmmm, hate to be devils advocate here, but as far as i am concerned the pubs around Forest Hill are a lot better than many of the others in the area, at least many of them have organised entertainment.
nice iceing, but were`s the meat

It’s great to see some modern shops open in Dartmouth road as well as your basic shop type, but I must admit that due to the pressures of this so called modern life I cop out and have done my big shop at a supermarket it seems such a shame that local councils talk a lot about community values, yet allow mega stores to open up and help to strangle the local mom& pop stores, of course all the councils seem to care about is of course money! I dare say bell green brings in a pretty penny perhaps it would be very community minded if they helped local shops by lowering their rates or have they? It seems that values are changing here we are in this modern world and our local public service mainstays, libraries, public baths and a fantastic gift of a museum date back to the steam age mmmmmmm? Planners like travel companies always show the most positive aspect, real life tends to turn around and bite you.
CCTV and its need shout volumes about public values and morality perhaps the council should start from the beginning, I’ve been at a school which the school or council did not allow police to visit and talk to pupils because it was not political correct mmmmm? Also in sydenham the council is quite happy to charge rates on a shop which sells products only related to drugs, does this not give the wrong signals well Foresthill thanks for the cctv`s but is that it ?????????

I have read with interest all the comments on the forum and I am really interested to get feeback from people as to how they would feel about a Coffee/ Sandwich bar opening in Forest Hill. I have seen that they are currently 6 cafe situated in Dartmonth Road, Perry Vale however I wondered why there are some many and if Forest Hill has the customers that would want to sit in a modern cafe. Please let me know what type of enviornment you would enjoy and when you would use this service...and if possible where you go at the moment. Thanks

I have just discovered your website and I think it is a really great idea. I am one of the masses who get off the train every day from the city and would like to be able to go out drink, eat and spend my money locally. I am all for local enterprise and would be more than happy to go out with my friends locally. I don't want to travel into London.

Yes please, I'd love a clean modern cafe with a cappucino machine & cakes. Forest Hill has some fine cafes, but a bit more variety would be welcome. The location needs to be close to the station - not too far up Dartmouth Road if it is going to survive.

I note that there is a new a new Cafe patisserie down the bottom on Brockley Rise.

Great news as so many of the shops down there have closed down....what about some more restaurants & bars

I spend most of my time working in the West End. I do go out for a drink in central london after work but would love to be able to drink in Forest Hill. If only there were more restaurants and cafes for us. It would be great to be able to meet more of my Forest Hill neighbours.

Reading through the various comments i am even more encouraged to hopefully launch and establish a business in Forest Hill. I dont want to say too much too early, but it would be a form of lounge/bar. There certainly seems to be a demand for a more 'classy' drinking/relaxing environment.

My plans are to create an environment that is in sync with the needs of the communities within FH, i am a very creative individual and will apply this creativity in many forms to the bar/lounge.....providing i am able to successfully negotiate terms etc for my choosen location - Dartmouth Rd.

Please feel free to comment or give advice and suggestions, all points of view welcome.

Dear Colin,
I've just moved into the area with my partner and we know of several other young couples who have also just bought in Forest Hill. I can certainly say that if you did open up such a business we would support it wholeheartedly. There are obivously already one or two good bars/restaurants but the more the merrier!
Good luck with your venture, keep us posted.

Colin - I'll second what George says. As you've probably seen from other pages within this forum, there is a lot of support for appropriate new ventures in FH.
Good luck

Without mentioning specific names it is quite hard to mention good places to go, but with regard to nice places for a good cup of coffee and cake - the health food shop on Dartmouth road now has seats inside and in their garden and do delicious coffee, cakes etc. Also on Kirkdale, just before Cobbs corner, a very relaxing coffee shop. Horniman have got a Gershwin concert on at the band stand today and do things throughout the summer. This area has a lot of potential, we just need to build on it.
